Default Foam on coilovers

I just got a pair of used TEIN Monoflex coilovers. The rear coilovers seem to have some kind of foam on the top hats, probably something the previous owner did. Does anyone know why one would add this foam?

Its hard as steel. Is it to simply avoid metal to metal contact? I guess it end up acting like a bushing, but a pretty bad one.

He likely did it for water sealing or corrosion protection...or both.

Are those the correct springs for that coilover? Was he attempting to use the foam as a spring noise damper and/or for spring centering?

Can you chip it off? I would chip it off.

Wow. What the heck is that stuff? Pritty cool. All factory stuff has some kind of isolator on it usually. For noise mostly. Probably didnt want any noises from metal to metal parts moving around.

In all the years I been dealing with suspension...this is a freaking first!!

The damn guy coated that **** probably cause he thought it would help with noise coming from that spherical bearing haha.

That's some hillbilly **** right there.
