Default Is my GSR head still good?

Got this head for free with an Integra shell. The guy I got it from claims it can be machined and fixed, just wondering what you guys think. Apparently he was just driving at 3000rpm when he heard a big bang. The valve was bent and 3 of the pistons had holes in them. He claims it happened because his vtec solenoid was stick on...not to sure if that's true but either way it's pretty knicked up.

looks prety bad. It can be fixed though with a lot of costly repairs. It needs welding, 8 (at least) new valves, 8 valve guides and 8 seats, all will cost at least 150$ (with labor), so better get a used head and keep this for some parts (cams, some valves, etc)

Just buy a used head that isn't trashed and rebuild it. You'll spend a lot more money in the long run trying to use that head you have.

But here is the thing, I got the head for free, and was planning on building a vtec head anyways. Well machining this head really cost that much?

It will definitely be cheaper to buy a used head in good condition. That head is pretty screwed up. It CAN be fixed, but would need welding/machining plus parts. It would cost more to fix than a new head.

How much should I be paying for a vtec head? Up here where I am in Canada they are around $500-$700.

you will find a good head for 300, i think i saw a good one in ebay. You can fit also b16 head.

search a lot, and watch out for cracks in used heads.

Ya I can't find any heads for that much. You probably found it on ebay.com rather then ebay.ca, which means I would actually have to pay more like $400 after the conversion from USD to CAD, and then I will also have to pay duty and shipping which is brutal in Canada. So it would come out to costing $500-$700.

Most heads that cheap on ebay, are either bare (need cams/rockers/cover/etc) or very sketchy (spray painted valve cover/ "Fully built"/ "rebuilt"/ broken studs/etc)....

ask also all local b16/b18 garages specialised in tuning. They must now a friend that has a friend who has a friend etc.
No rush needed. These things can take time.

If the bare head has valve seats and guides allready installed, you can use everything else from your head, just buying some valves.

I actually do see GSR heads for around $300 here in Georgia (USA). Not sure of the condition but I've seen a number of them.

Find me a clean and complete one, from a reputable seller for $300 and I will give you a $50 finders fee lol.

$300 will be a bit difficult for you to find a decent GSR head, but they are out there. I don't think that head is repairable for less than you can get a decent used one. You might just have to have one shipped in and pay the duty fees, if you can't find anything local.
