Transmission problems
1994 Honda Accordand transmission is going reverse and forward but it slips and runs pretty rough. Brought it to a garage and they said Honda recommends a drain and fill four times and quoted a $600 estimate. What are your thoughts on what they're telling me?
Wait, they quoted you 600 dollars to drain and fill your transmission 4X? That is crazy. You could buy the DW1 for about $9 a quart from the dealer. Each drain and fill will take about 3 quarts. So 12X9 is 118. I think doing a drain and fill 4x is a bit excessive; I just did a drain and fill 3x on my accord. I would clarify to see what service is included in this $600 estimate. If your tranny is slipping, I doubt that drain and filling will fix these problems. In some cases, changing out the fluid (if the transmission has not been properly maintained) can speed up the deaths of transmissions so that is something to keep in mind. How many miles does the car have? Auto or manual?
Functionality of the transmission operation is greatly affected by the running condition of the engine.
If the transmission is slipping verify the fluid is full and not burnt smelling. On older high mileage units I prefer the engine running, transmission fully warmed up, place the trans in every gear until engagement, and then back into park and then check the dipstick. Pull it out, wipe it off, place it back in, pull it out and then check the fluid level. If it's not within the hash marks it is probably low on fluid.
If the fluid has not been changed, or no record, change the fluid. it will take ~2.5quarts per drain/refill. Do this three times. If it has been a while add Trans Tune or a similar hydraulic cleaner to the transmission. Do not use a leak sealer or anti-slip treatment, those are just goos that will make the problem worse.
Verify the throttle valve cable between the throttle body and transmission is correctly adjusted. No pretension and no slack.
If the transmission starts to slip or go into a neutral mode while also whining loudly from the bellhousing area then it is most likely that the sump pickup is impacted with debris and junk from no fluid changes. The whining is the pump cavitating with no fluid flow.
If the transmission has ~200K miles and the fluid has not been regularly changed it is most likely the pump sump pickup is blocked.
Use Tylers method to clean off the screen. https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-...dvice-3264675/

M6HA is different from the H4As, Tyler had the benefit of a spare core kicking about to find the exact location on a H4A. You would need to do the same on a M6HA to find the correct location.
