Default erratic tachometer

I have a 1997 Honda Civic DX hatchback with a D16Y7 manual transmission. A couple of days ago my tach just quit working. When i turn the car off needle wraps all the way around till the little peg stops it from going any further, and then while i'm driving it will move back up to between 5 and 6 thousand rpm. The car runs fine and the speedometer works great. Any suggestions?

The tach signal comes from the ICM in the distributor, so when the tach starts twitching it generally means the ICM is starting to go out. You can either ignore it until the car won't start or replace it now if the twitchy tach bothers you.

i went with the airtex icm from rockauto.
reasonably priced and built to avoid the heat failure that plagues many of them
so far so good...
