AC Evaporator / TXV Replacement
I recently replaced my air conditioning evaporator and thermal expansion valve (TXV) in my Sedan. The bulb at the end of the capillary tube on the TXV is attached to the suction (larger) tube of the evaporator with a metal clip, and then wrapped in a cork insulation tape. Neither my new evaporator or TXV came with new tape to apply, so I ended up sourcing and buying some. The problem is, I had to buy 30 feet, and only ended up using about 1 foot. If you're not sure what I'm talking about, I have attached a picture showing the evaporator/TXV assembled and ready to go back into the car. The tape I'm talking about is pointed out by the arrow. This tape is a mixture of granulated cork, butyl rubber, and asphalt. It is gooey, and stays that way...the tape I removed from the original evaporator (27 years old) was still tacky. All this to say, if you end up replacing your TXV and/or evaporator and need some insulation tape, give me a shout...I can mail you a foot off of my 29 foot roll if you pay shipping. Just figured I'd save some other folks on here from having to buy a $20+ roll of tape they only need 1 foot of. Insulate that bulb...it needs it.
Wow that's awesome. I ended up re-using my old 1989 tape when I had my system apart. I couldn't believe that stuff was still malleable. On the EG it uses foam tape and I was able to source some of that locally at a refrigerator/ac repair shop. Same deal....I had to buy a big old roll and only used a few inches.
