Default Will an 03 Lx 5sp tranny work in an 03 Ex 5sp car with a D17A2

First off, I don't know if I NEED a new tranny or not. We replaced the D17A1 with an A2. New clutch. Drove it 5 blocks and the motor just fell on it's face. My wife was driving so she pulled over to let me drive. I pushed the clutch in, put it in 1st, released the clutch annnd nothing. I tried all 5 gears including rev. How would I know what's wrong? And so I found a tranny from an Lx for $600. What is the difference between an Lx tranny and an ex? Looks like the shift cable linkage is different. Any ideas?

Did you replace the ECU? D17A1's do not have VTEC, where D17A2's DO have VTEC.

Well funny story......it was my wife's car when she was married previously. They were in the process of getting a new engine put in it when the shop went under. The shop had put a temporary A1 motor in it till they got the right one(with Vtec) in. Shop closed in the process leaving her with the wrong motor. So I bought the A2 motor and replaced it and the clutch at same time.

So, no. She said original motor was VTEC motor and temporary motor was not. So ECU should be right one.

Did they replace the ECU when they temporarily swapped in the D17A1? If so, then you don't have the proper ECU. Do you have a Check Engine Light displaying?

As for the transmission itself, you should have no issues swapping in the D17A1 transmission since it is a manual transmission car.

I don't know. She doesn't either. It was having a lack of power with the A1 motor as well. So I figured I would put the right by one in and get it running right. When we got it running, it ran great in the garage. Peppy. Took it off the jack stands and drove a couple block and blah. And a couple blocks later the tranny/clutch problem surfaced. Like the linkage wasn't even hooked up. But it was
Yeah, it
has a few codes. Crank sensor, air intake/charge temp sensor, upper 02 sensor, and a knock sensor.

Crank and knock sensor lights alone could easily put the car in LIMP mode and force an open loop scenario. This would make the car feel very sluggish, and should be fixed to get any sort of hp back from the engine.

I did purchase all the sensors that we're throwing codes. I figure I'll do the timing belt while I have the front of for the crank sensor too.
As for the tranny issue. I wonder if I just didn't pull the axles out and put em back in right. The splines in the end of the right side shaft (outside of the clip) were chewed up and both axles were hyper extended. Maybe there were separated when I put it back together and so I didn't go back together completely so they just weren't engaging???? I'll replace both and make sure they go in all the way this time.

Update.... So I had to replace 02 SENSORS, crankshaft position sensor, and it had a vacuum hose that didn't get put back on the Idle air control valve (this was the biggest issue!). It's running much better now.
And the transmission woes were my doing. I didn't take proper steps pulling and replacing the axles. So I bought new ones, put em in and wouldn't ya know, it's moving again. Thanks for all the responses.

Oh, I did put a new timing belt and water pump in it. And my cat was completely plugged so I replaced that.
