Default Acura/Honda Guy

Hello All,

I've owned a few Honda/Acura's in my life. Right now I am trying to help one of my nieces replace the motor in her 2001 Honda Civic LX sedan. She blew a rod and punched a hole in the block and oil pan.
I don't know what size motor this is or if different model civic in 2001 came with different engine packages. I tried looking under the hood but couldn't find any info.
If I locate a used motor at a junkyard is there any way (short of tearing it down) to know if it is good? I guess I could manually rotate the crank and check compression.

There sure be a code on the engine usually front of the block e.g. b16c1 or d15***. Yours should be a b17something
