Reusing Rear Wheel Hub Assembly
Hello all, i have a 1994 EG with an integra rear disc conversion. I'm just curious to know, can i reuse my rear wheel hub assembly? I know for the front's you're supposed to change it but for the rears, my hub doesn't sound like it's rubbing against each other when i turn the whole assembly. The reason why i'm asking is because my rears are a bit rusty but with a good cleaning they can be clean again. Or is there a possibility of the bearing to get messed up when taking out the rears? Thanks!
It should be of the cartridge bearing type. In that case, yes you can remove the nut and take the hub / bearing assembly off of the spindle and re-use it. The bearings are not made to come out of the hub-- if bearing is bad, replace as a unit. Also the nut should not be reused and must be properly tightened.
Yeah i noticed that compared to the front where you have to press the whole wheel hub assembly out of the spindle, cut the racer etc. Compared to the rears, where it comes with the whole assembly and bearing into one. So for the nut, you are referring to the axle nut correct? If so, for knowledge purposes, why can't i reuse the nut? Thanks!!
It's a sort of lock nut that has intentional friction with the threads. When you reuse it, that friction is less and there is a slightly higher possibility it could come loose. It is one of those places where a single nut coming off would be really bad.
