Thoughts on this 2008 Civic to purchase?
I don't know much about cars at all but really in a desperate need to purchase one. I came across this one...thoughts please to help me decide if I should even take a look at it? I would prefer a car with only one owner so that's the downside on this one. Thanks for your help and input!

I would buy a car from a private seller, not a dealership. Dealers mark everything up above a reasonable value.
You really can't tell how a car truly is until you drive it. You'll want to put it through its paces to make sure it's up to par-listening for abnormal sounds. It's also a good idea to look underneath the vehicle and check to make sure all the systems in the car works as well.
Never rush into buying a used car. Sometimes it can take weeks to find the right one. Gl

The problem is I feel like I can be swindled even more from a private seller because they don't provide as much info as a dealer does? Again, I dont have experience doing this and I dread buying a car...I have been looking for months. Just was hoping for an opinion on this car and obviously I would take it to a mechanic to check it out before purchasing.
Just so frustrated and feeling so down because I know nothing about this stuff....

all 06-09 r18 usdm civics are prone to cracking

if it had the original engine swapped out then it's fine but if its original then i would avoid it

Only a very small amount will ever have the problem and they usually show the issue long before the extended warranty runs out. I'd recommend a R18 civic since other than the possible engine block they are bulletproof cars and are a great value.
I must say though, I see a TON of the R18 civics running around my area without issue.
and you always gotta worry about it happening while you're driving and you don't catch it or see it in time after the warranty period has fully elapsed as happened to myself
also you don't know if any of those civics had the issue occur before the warranty period expired(lucky) and they got a nice free engine block installed without any further worry
i speak from experience since I had/have this problem and praying it will expose itself before the warranty is up(which started from the day it was sold so likely from 2007-2017), is it really worth the risk ?

Trust me, I work for Honda and see every one that comes through. We take pictures of every single leak. I see how many are covered and goodwilled (almost every single one) and I've owned two of them personally. I still would recommend one to anybody I know. The affected cars are so small in comparison and because of the age most all have shown up already if they've had the problem and the rest Honda has been good about fixing even if over the warranty period. The good in the car far outweighs the possible negative.
the op can make their own determination
ive owned 12 hondas/acuras in my life and honda still wouldn't do **** about my block so i definitely will make sure my opinion is heard, but what the op chooses is up to them
i think if it happened to you and you had to deal with a cracked block you would have a different opinion
nobody said we had to agree, if you think it's a good buy then keep saying so, this is a discussion of opinions not a right or wrong discussion

yeah, very fishy
thats totally cool that you wanna ride hondas nuts cause you work for them but they are hardly a saint
try three dealers and they all said nothing they could do since it was outside if warranty, and i made sure to call honda on different occasions to try to get a different person that might actually be nice enough to help a loyal honda owner who has likely spent over $10000 on honda parts over the years in addition to an 03 civic brand new, 05 rsx type s brand new both financed through american honda, and numerous other used hondas and acuras
yeah, very fishy

I'm not riding anyones nuts, you were talking down Honda and I'm simply defending them because the very thing you are complaining about is what I do for a living and what you are saying simply doesn't add up. I think the OP can make a honest choice based on the information given. And if they buy it and it has a problem down the road and needs a block feel free to pm me and i'll take care of it.
How would they know it's out of warranty if they never knew the mileage like you said? I have two claims right in front of me from engine blocks being replaced this week and both are well out of warranty and were goodwilled.

Have you actually read the service bulletin at all ?
When Honda goodwills a claim they write an RO and base the claim on how long you've owned it (if you just bought it and its leaking you don't deserve a new engine), miles, and service history. They HAVE to know the mileage to write an RO to even deny a claim. Sounds like your attitude is the main reason they didn't even attempt to goodwill the repairs as they save that for good customers not little cry babies. Like I said, I've never had a customer come in and have an engine block denied. Maybe have a better attitude next time.

Thanks but i'll continue to discuss things I feel fit to discuss. I'm not conforming to the new daycare Honda tech moderation that took over lately which is why the board is dead, so either ban me or lock the thread.
Attitude has nothing to do with it. The only thing fishy is you not knowing there is no mileage limitation whatsoever on this tsb and now trying to backpedal and claim Honda offers goodwill on every engine that's past the time period when there's nothing to back up that ridiculous claim.
