Stubborn Maintenance Required light won't reset
Hey Guys,
Despite the advice I have read on how to reset the MR indicator and following the procedure listed in the manual the MR indicator on my 2001 Honda Civic LE that is a manual will not reset. Is there a sensor that is broken or a fuse attached to the odometer/trip I can replace? I am the second owner and looking to sell it. I have been fine with it constantly on knowing the original owner and myself have kept it up well. I just know a new buyer might be set off a little uneasy if it stays on.
Thank you,
Dan

Do you know where the radio CODE is for the car? (There's a thread on the location possibilities already)
Because if you do, you can always pull the negative cable on the battery to get it cleared.

Exactly how the manual states. Over the last 3 days reading through pages and pages of forums on the same subject which seem to recommend this way or disconnecting the battery. It seems to help 50% of the people so I know that I am not failing from attention to detail. I do pretty well mechanically but am just not familiar with this issue. I have had other mechanics try to reset it the as the manual says and then just tell me it's a common problem just ignore it which must be what the other 50% of the people on the forums do. Again, this car is in great shape with allot of life left that I'd like to pass on to someone else, but selling it with this problem seems to be a hang up.

Ok. I wanted to see how you were doing it to make sure it's correct. Mine is stubborn. I think the button is worn. I have to press harder than normal to get it to reset.
Press the trip meter button, turn key to on position while still holding button. Hold till light turns off.

There are several cars I've had to really press hard on, to the point of hurting my finger. OP, does your odometer trip button work otherwise, i.e. does it reset the odometer?
I had the same problem with my 2001 honda civic the odometer trip button works fine, I had to press it in really hard in order to reset it ,while following proper procedures to reset it. Thanks for the tip!
Same here but notices I had to push in the trip button extremly hard for atleast 10 sec and it actually worked that time. Before I was having every problem on this thread I could not reset it to save my life but now I know if it dont just try pushing alot harder it's just worn out
I had the same problem with my 2004 Honda Odyssey. Tried many different ways including disconnecting the battery cable -- did not reset. Only after I read the discussions above, I tried to press the reset button really-really hard -- bon, it worked. I could not believe it. It works for Odyssey!. I believe it would work for other Honda models as well.
Thanks to prodjay10, DumpdEJ6, kindleshot, and Rotto187 for posting the solutions, although they are Honda Civic.
The root cause? Not sure. I believe -- Since the reset button works for reset the trip miles, it is not the button's contact problem. It could be the board that has an unreliable connection somewhere for the light reset. When pressing really hard it might have deformed the board and made the contact for the light reset function. This is only a hypothesis. The ultimate way of fixing it is to replace the board where the reset button is located.
Cheers.
