Default 2002 Civic EX Sedan Rear Bearing Assembly

Does anyone know whether the 2002 EX requires an external tone ring on the rear bearing assembly for the ABS sensor to work properly? Just want to make sure that I buy the right part from Honda when I try to do this repair.

yes it does, it looks like only the ex has abs and it has the toner ring while the dx/lx/hx don't

holmesnmanny - I appreciate your quick reply! ... the reason that I ask is that the existing part on my civic does have the tone ring BUT I contacted MagAuto.com and they sent me the genuine Honda part without the tone ring. After I sent it back, I talked with them and they stated they contacted Honda America and they confirmed that the Genuine Honda rear bearing assembly (Honda part # 42200-S5A-008) for the 2002 Civic EX Sedan (my car) DOES NOT have the tone ring. So, I'm really confused! Does anyone know how the ABS sensor works properly when the rear hub assembly doesn't have the tone ring? Is the tone ring inside the rear hub assembly or does it have a magnetic encoder built into the wheel bearing? Would hate to get the wrong part installed on my car and realize that the ABS system no longer works!

Do you know a reputable place online that would most likely sell the correct Genuine Honda item?

This is the ex hub and bearing in part 1

This is the dx hub and bearing in part 1

You can see that the ex part number is different from the other two. Also, if you click on those links and try to find an abs modulator, only the ex model has one so only the ex has abs of those trims. I'm guessing the si does too.

The strange thing is that rockauto has speed sensor wiring assemblies for all trims which is quite odd.

But if you buy the Honda oem part, even though the picture doesn't appear to have the toner ring you will obviously get the correct part for your particular car.

That was very helpful to see ... thanks for the legwork on my behalf ... the funny thing is that I did order the EX version of the rear bearing assembly ... it had the proper Honda Part number (Honda 42200-S5A-008) ... however, they DIDN'T send me the proper part (it was missing the tone ring) even though it appeared to be in the proper box (that is, had the proper Honda part #) ... so I shipped it back ... I think I'll just ask for a refund and try to obtain the part from another online retailer ... BTW, like I stated above, I ordered it from MagAuto online ... do you have any experience ordering from them or have heard about their reputation more generally? ... would you recommend hondapartscheap online (the one you linked to with the diagrams) to obtain the correct part? ... at this point, I just want to identify an online seller that will send me the genuine Honda part at a competitive price ...

42200-S5A-008 clearly has tone ring but I think that part is all figured out now...

I usually call the local dealer and ask for a price on the part# directly. Don't even tell them what car, just literally "do you have part 42200-S5A-008 and how much?". If they ask what car just refuse, you already know what part you need and don't need them to screw that up again. Many times it's worth just getting it there versus hassle of ordering online + shipping. Don't just assume the dealer is going to charge $400 for a $80 part all the time...
