When driving in town the car will act like it's not getting gas...if I press on the accelerator it picks right up...but stopping, starting off it will act like it's not getting fuel. What could be the most likely problem?

 

how exactly does an engine act when it's not getting enough gas?

i only ask this because your statements contradict each other... an engine that isn't getting enough gas wouldn't "pick right up" so I don't know why you would say it acts like it isn't getting gas when it obviously is. Have you ever run an engine right out of fuel to know what an engine not getting enough gas feels like?

 

My description is accurate. Say it's going down the road at 50mph at 2,500 rpm...if I press the accelerator a little it might slow down to 2,400 rpms....if I press harder after a pause, it will go up to 2,600rpms.

 

Do you mean it has a hesitation when you apply light throttle but press it harder then it works fine?

 

Yes, there is that hesitation...doesn't happen all the time...some times it runs normally...other times it will occur.
