Default Greddy SP, doh

1st time I took my GS-R to the track, 2nd run, weld from pipe to my muffler broke. I was trying to figure out why the car in the next lane got loud all of a sudden, turns out it was me.

I'm trying to figure out if I should just get it re-welded or look into a Thermal catback. I love the Thermal on my CRX, but I feel it may be a bit too much for the daily driver...love how mellow the Greddy sounds.

how old is your exhaust? Ive heard about mufflers and resonators rusting on on the SPs. Ive also heard of the pipe breaking at the resonator since it hangs so low.

Got the exhaust soon after the car was purchased...so that's almost 7 years. The first 5 years, the car was in Las Vegas, where it's very dry.

Then the last 2 years it came to Houston where it's disgustingly humid, but the car is always garaged. Unfortunately, the rust started from the inside. I love how exhaust sounds, especially for a straight-thru muffler, but I think I'll go with stainless next time around.

damn 7 years? thats like a world record or something from the experience of me and my friends... our Greddy's lasted around 3 years...

I had a Greddy SP (Trust B/L back then...they Trust and Greddy also had a 1 year warranty back then) in the mid 90's and when I got it it was cool for about 1.5-2 years.. then the resonator rusted out internally and started making the ugliest/worst sounding metal on metal clanking noise.. it really sucked to have a pretty nice and clean looking car.. then for it to sound like it was going to fall apart... ...

anyway I called Greddy to see if I could BUY a new B-pipe... I said that the exhaust system (b-pipe and muffler) is about $500.. so I'd be willing to pay like 1/2 or whatever for the B-pipe/center pipe w/ the resonator part.. their response was "we don't sell our exhaust systems in parts... you can buy a whole new exhaust system if your like" I was like wtf?

I took my car to a local muffler shop and had them drop the B-pipe/center pipe portion and they cut off the resonator that was busted and welded in another portion... it was good for about another year... then the rear muffler portion rusted out... the pipe INSIDE the muffler which is attached to the muffler and tip rusted out/became dislodged or something... and the exhaust started getting way louder and ALSO started blowing composite fiberglass cubes (the sound deadening material).... I didn't know what this was at first.. I'd see these little small cotton ball looking things all over my garage floor.. but they were square cubes instead of round like cotton *****... I picked it up and looked and it had texture/lines that formed them and some where white.. some were clearish... at first I didn't know where the hell these came from and started looking above to see if the insulation for the garage/roofing was falling...

I finally figured out it was the sound deadening/composite cubes blowing out of my exhaust/muffler portion.. it soon became loud as hell and I replaced my exhaust...
I got a really good deal on a Greddy Evo lolz.. so I went w/ Greddy again.. so far I've had my Evo for 2 years.. going on 3 yrs in like April 2003.... lets hope nothing happens.. or else I'm getting Mugen next...

oh yeah I live in Southern CA.. so I wouldn't really consider our weather to be wet/raining all the time.. dunno y it rusted out so fast... I did live near the coast though.. so maybe the salt water and humidity had something to do w/ it...

Is the Greddy Evo like that? I haven't heard of the EVO's rusting and falling apart. LMK... I'm about to get a Greddy Evo exhaust...

Turns out I can get a Greddy SP from a 99 Civic SI for a good price. We're fairly certain that it will work in my 96 GS-R, does anybody have any experience with this.

If i remember correctly the B pipe is a little too short but the bends are the same. So I guess you can have a muffler shop custom fit that part. As for the rear section, when i lined it up, It didnt look like it would fit since the bends are a little different.

well like I stated above.. after my Greddy SP basically fell apart (resonator rusted, muffler inside pipe broke, blew composite/fiberglass sound deadening cubes, etc) I replaced it w/ a Greddy Evo... I've had it for 2 years or so and so far its help up well...

back when I bought my Greddy SP/Trust B/L they had 1 years warranty.. my Greddy Evo comes w/ a 3 year warranty.. maybe they were aware of the problems on the older models and somehow addressed/corrected this concern so they are able to warranty it for longer.. I don't know.. but so far my Greddy Evo is holding up just fine.. no problems at all

I've also heard some bad stuff about the Greddy SP and it rusting...

they also changed how the greddy sp looks...its ugly in my opinion. I want to get one, but i don't know anymore because of everyone telling me that its going to rust. Im thinking of maybe getting APEX WS, but the problem with that is its really quiet. I want something with noise, but not too much.

whats wrong w/ a quiet exhaust?

if you want noise from an exhaust that still sounds good get an Apexi N1 or Tanabe Racing Medallion and don't get the silencer..that will be a nice exhaust w/ some "noise" for you.. personally I like quieter exhausts..

Old school RS*Rs were the BEST when it comes to quiet sound and good performance. My friend bought the 304 series full stainless RS*R catback for his GSR back in '96, and to this day it still sounds and looks brand new.

Too bad GReddy exhausts turn to **** after a couple of years.

I actually wanted an RS*R back in the mid 90's but the shop I got it from said they were back ordered or something where they couldn't get it for a while.. I think it was called RS*R magnum series or something?> the canister was painted flat black and the tip was silver... that was what I was ininitially planning to get but they didn't have it so I went w/ the Greddy SP..

My evo just ate ****... im getting my apex n1 with custom 2.5" piping on friday.

My evo makes the same hideous rattling/clanking noises that you guys are describing with your SPs.

JUST SAY NO TO GREDDY!!!

is the Apex'i N1 exhaust CARB legal? With papers?

I know Greddy is and I really need the legal documents to be ok with the California Refs...

i am not sure. I live in Arizona and no one really cares about car legality here, so long as your car isn't puffing out you-mung-gus clouds of black smoke etc.

nothing is wrong with quiet, but i just want something i can hear when hitting vtec and at WOT. You know what im saying, a little louder than stock, but not too loud. N1 is too loud for me. I don't want to get pulled over and sound like a bumble bee driving around.

liquid: yeah I know what you mean.. I thought you meant you want something loud just for the sound my bad... misunderstanding..

tegasaurus: damn how long have you had your EVO? I'm going on 2 years.. going to be 3 years in April 2003 and mine hasn't had any problems... my next exhaust (if I still have the car then) is going to be Mugen.. I figure this will be the last exhaust I'll put on the car so might as well go all out.....I've had a Greddy SP and now a Greddy Evo.... well lemme know how long your EVO lasted so I can know when to expect it to go out..

that rattle definately sucks when everything else about your car is good.. then it makes that ugly rattle... I know what you mean

i have a greddy sp exhaust , with the resonator still attached, sounds real good not lound and raspy but good sounding. people ask me all the time about it, since the y never heard a gsr so quiet. Once you get on it it gets loud but you can easily hold a conversation with a passenger. my intregra goes 13.4 on motor with full body nothing taken out of the car before i raced also on drag radials , 2.4 60ft so there is more left in it>!!!!!

how long have you had it? I loved my Greddy SP when I got it.. the quiet tone/rumble at idle, the double rolled/walled tip, how it wasn't extremely loud even when you get on the throttle.. then the resonator rusted out and it sounded hella nasty.. after I got it fixed it was fine again for a while until the pipe INSIDE the muffler broke and the sound deadening chunks started to come out..
