Honda CR-V 2010 sunroof shatters:why +who is responsable??
We went out today and found a large hole in our CR-V 2010 and shattered glass left in the sunroof. Not sure when and how it happened since we last opened sunroof 4 days ago. However, we are not aware of the car roof being hit by a rock or other object.
Is there a defect in the sunroof?
Is there a defect in the sunroof?
Sunroofs that contain a manufacturing defect generally fail while the vehicle is moving (and typically while moving quickly). As the car moves faster and faster, the pressure differential between the cabin and the air moving over the roof grows more and more. A poorly tempered glass panel will explode outwards since the cabin contains high pressure and the fast-moving air on the other side of the sunroof is at a very low pressure. I know a number of manufacturers have had this problem through the years, most notably Nissan with their Maxima that launched for the 2004 model year. I don't know of it being a problem on the 2010 CR-V, but some research could turn that up. Check with the USDOT (www.safercar.gov) and see if any complaints have been recorded. The fact that your car was stationary when the sunroof failed leads me to believe it may not be a defect issue, in this case, but it's worth doing some Google searching to verify! Good luck!
