Falken Azenis tire review... Are they good?
I'm in the market to replace my Dunlop sp5000/ pirelii p700 combo. The SP5's are balding and have to be changed out soon. In any case, does anyone here know if...
1. The Azenis are decent in Auto-X / Track events? (no drag review please)
2. The Azenis have decent tire life?
3. The Azenis have "decent" rain traction?
Any comments would be appreciated.

They do have decent rain traction, but the stock michelins are better.

Well, I have only used them at the strip and they got me 2.2's all night

I use them in Auto-X events, compare to kumho 712, i like my falken better.
tire life, I have yet to find out, tires been on for 4 months only, but they do wear very easily, evident after a auto-x, compare before and after.
rain, been raining here for the past week, got to test their rain capability, they are ok, just use your head. I do very few hwy driving, mostly city driving, so dont know how well they resist hydroplane.
hope it helps.
autox
very high limit rain
tire wear
BUT THEY ARE DIRT CHEAPwall stiffness
1. I was pretty pleased with mine. Excellent grip, make sure to run plenty of air pressure. The sidewalls are VERY stiff.
2. No, I had mine for... let's see... 4 months or so? I bought them ALMOST completely brand new mounted on some rims, and they're down to the treadwear bars now. I do put a lot of miles on my car, but I expected them to last longer.
3. Despite what everybody says, they actually do pretty well in the rain. I made a few trips over wet mountain passes on them and had no problems at all. Standing water is another thing altogether though. The blocky tread pattern and one puny line through the tire is enough to get you hydroplaning in even the shallowest of puddles. Just be aware of that fact and don't drive like a maniac in the rain and you'll do fine.
Overall I was very happy with the Azenis, even though the tread life was not that great. They're pretty cheap though, so going through two sets where you would normally go through one with another tire isn't too bad...
[EDIT]: looks like BAR-F1 and I are pretty much echo'ing the same thing here.

The Falken website only lists them as the "Azenis Sport". So I assume there is only one model.
The cheapest I've found them for so far is from vulcantire.com which is selling 205/50 VR15's for 63 a tire and $282 shipped. Sound about right to you or anyone else?

2) 100-120 runs would be my guess.
3) They are excellent 'dry' tires, but the jury is out when they're 'wet.' The best thing I've heard is they won't break loose on you suddenly in the rain; you'll have some warning first.
...My next question is, are there different models in the Azenis line? If so, which do you have? The Falken website only lists them as the "Azenis Sport". So I assume there is only one model...
I'm wondering, at what rpm do you launch your car to get that 2.2? Do you ease off the clutch or just dump it?
...
They make an Azenis ST-115. Supposed to be much better in the rain and has a 360 treadwear rating...

My Azenis were one of the best investments for my car to date. Grip is excellent. The difference between them and the craptacular stock tires at the auto-x is beyond night and day. For the price they are a great deal!

ST-115's are it's own model. Apparantly there is only one model of Azenis. Thanks tho.
BTW, did you know Falken tires are made for the US market by Goodyear???
LOL ...
there is two models of azenis .. ST-115 and sport.
but the one which get more attention is the Azenis Sport, therefore when refering to azenis, most think of azenis SPORT only, but there IS a Azenis ST-115, with less agressive tread and longer lasting compound .. also M+S.

I think 2.2 60 fts are good...but I don't think they're impressive in promoting Azenis. I get 2.2s on my stock, worn goodyear intrepid tires on the 13'' vx wheels. I'd hope that they'd help shifting into 2nd gear, because I feel the loss of traction at that moment also slows you down considerably.

Yeah I too was going to say that 2.2 60-footers can be gotten on any old shitty tires basically.
I've had my Azenis for about 6 months now and they still have a lot of tread left, but I don't drive my car a lot of miles.
They are hands down (IMO) the best tire for dry grip. I've auto-X'd on mine and they are better than any other tires I've driven on (that weren't R compound
) thus far.
You can tell that they are soft though once heated, because they get those weird scarring marks on the edges when you push them hard, much like R compound tires do.
As far as wet weather goes, I think they're fine. My car is a ligghtweight at 2040lbs. and I know the rear has no weight on it. Combine that with my 550 rear springs and the 14mm rear sway and even good "rain" tires would be skiddish in the wet.
The Azenis are fine by me, but then again I never push my car in the rain. I can see how they might get scary when down to the wear bar because of the wide tread blocks though, but i'm not there yet.
Something to consider too is that they are more noisy than most street tires.
Also they are pretty big compared to any 195-50-15 and even bigger than most 205-50-15 - I happen to like this, but if your car is dumped then you'll probably hate them because they are taller and wider than most 15s I've seen.
Other tires to compare to the Azenis IMO:
Dunlop FM901 - a tad cheaper and better in the rain, but not as sticky on dry roads.
Pirelli P700Z - $38.00 a piece from Tire Rack! I owned these right before the Azenis and they grip good, but not as good and they went out of round and rode like **** on the freeway - but they're so damn cheap!!! I'd say they rival the Azenis is bang-for-buck because they are grippy and cheaper than any other tire besides some crude off-brands.
Yokohama AVS-i - discontinued though. they could be had for like $52.00 a piece, but they're all gone now in 195-50-15 and 205-50-15. If you want 195-45-15 they're out there though.
Yokohama has a new tire out to replace the AVS-i and they are cheap, but I've never driven on them.
The tires I listed above have all been driven on by me, so I'm directly comparing them to my Azenis and that's where I draw my comparisons and conclusions from.
I'd still say that overall the Azenis can't be beat. Stickiest damn tire in the dry, decent in the rain, and cheap.

Ive had mine for a year now, in a 205 50 15. For the money there are not many tyres that are better. Ive been to the Mtns plenty of times along with a night at road atlanta. They handle pretty good considering they are not even z rated. As far as tread life, pretty decent, if I didnt have horrible camber they would all 4 still be in great condition. Mine have worn badly on the inside on the front two, mostly from drag racing and tons of burnouts though. Wet traction is pretty good as well. Although I probably will not buy them again, because I love yokohama tyres.
I've had my 205/50x15" Azenis on 15x7" Kosei K1 wheels since January. 30 autocrosses, 2 track days, 10K daily driven miles, and 30 laps around the Carlisle Mini road course, and I'm down to 3mm of tread.
My car has 0 toe front and rear, 1.5 negative camber front, and 2.2 rear. Car was dropped 2" front and rear.
Brand new (once you scrubbed them in) were great tires. In the rain and in the dry. I took corners during a downpour at the same speed I take in the dry.
At 4mm they started hydroplaning at 75mph. At 70mph they were fine. My wife was also hydroplaning in her new Protege5 with new Dunlop Sport 5000.
For autocross these tires changed my car. I went from 215/40x16" Kumho 712s to the Azenis and I basically won every event in my region
Had a co-driver beat me by .2 seconds once
I also revitalized my tires with Traction V, a agent which re-softens the tire after you heat cycle your tires too many times. They become hard rubber.
The price is
for the amount of performance and grip you get. Spend twice the amount for BFG KDs for a tid bit quicker tire.

And I thought I was pushing too hard, the tire was scarring on the edges, and look likes little piece of rubber are flaking off.

Been raining here for the past week, azenis is in the garage and on goes the snow tires. But they are decent in the rain.
Something to consider too is that they are more noisy than most street tires.
not really, the tire noise is acceptable (well I got full interior
), compare to the big chuck of blocks snow tire i got on right now, azenis is very very very quiet
Other tires to compare to the Azenis IMO:
Dunlop FM901 - a tad cheaper and better in the rain, but not as sticky on dry roads.
The only other tire i tried, it has a lower limit then the azenis, I only driven it at the autocross.
