the E in VTEC-E stands for Economy. Basically its a VTEC for better gas mileage.

Economy, not enhanced. It gets better gas mileage

According to Honda, the 'E' stands for Enhanced. The HX cam, for instance, is hotter than the "regular VTEC" cam, and it's a roller cam design. I'll be glad to publish the specs for the "regular VTEC" and VTEC-E cams if you'd like. It's definitely an enhanced version over old-school VTEC, which died and was buried in 2000. VTEC-E is still going strong...

6G 96-00 USDM engine specs - Cam lobe height IN/ EX:

* DX/CX/LX [D16Y7] 35.299mm/ 37.281mm

* EX [D16Y8] 38.274mm [mid]/ 38.008mm

* HX [D16Y5] 38.427mm [pri]/ 38.784mm

Sorry, don't have durations, but it's obvious who has the biggest '****.'

" VTEC-E is some times confused to be just another high-RPM optimizing mechanism like other VTEC variants. And there is some truth to this: since only one intake valve is used at low RPMs, the one normal cam lobe is made to open that one valve slightly taller and for longer duration than if both intake valves are used. At higher RPMs, both valves follow this same cam lobe so they are both opened slightly taller and for longer duration. This results in a slight improvement in high RPM breathing compared to non-VTEC-E engines and thus slightly more power. This is evident by comparing the Civic DX and Civic HX engine. The two engines are essentially the same except for the VTEC-E in the Civic HX. But the Civic HX's VTEC-E mechanism results in 115hp, versus 106hp from the Civic DX. So the Civic HX has more power in addition to better fuel economy. But make no mistake, VTEC-E is designed with economy as the primary goal, not power output."

wham bam thank you m'aam

and yes the technology is better, but used/aimed for efficientcy, not utmost performance...yummy roller rockers....

Sorry to burst your bubble, but HX engines have slightly more power than 'regular VTEC' engines. It's needed for the taller gearing. Forget the claimed HP in Honda sales brochures...

Real life dyno figures:
'96 EX = 100-HP
'97 HX = 103-HP
