Default Engine Oil in Bell Housing...

I just pulled the tranny off of my B18C and noticed, first when I removed the flywheel cover that quite a few drips of engine oil came out. With the tranny off, I can see where inside the housing, behind the flywheel the block is wet with some oil top to bottom. I do not have any problem with the clutch slipping, it doesn't appear to be making it's way onto the flywheel at all. Just running down the side of the block and out the little drain hole at the bottom of the transmission.

Is a leaky crankshaft seal a huge thing to worry about? Does it indicate other possible problems, such as the bearing going bad, or anything else that needs addressed?

I would rather not pull the clutch, just wanted to put the new tranny in and leave it alone for now. The oil leak itself is not significant enough to bother me.

Thanks,

I would think it's just a bad seal.

you have the trans off change that seal. while it might be small now if in 2-3 months it really starts leaking you will be upset you didn't do it now.

Yeah, change that rear main seal.

It's 12 bolts or so to get your clutch off.

While I agree it makes sense to fix while I have the tranny out, along with the clutch, resurface flywheel, etc. etc. it almost never stops.... I already threw my new junkyard tranny in so I can drive it the rest of this summer. I'll get a couple good months here in MN at most before it'll be garaged again, at which time I will start to build a YS1 trans, replace clutch, seals, etc. etc.

You're gonna kick your *** when your clutch gets roasted from the oil. You'll learn though

Maybe so, but then I'll be able to justify the new clutch and tranny at least

I don't wanna have to dick with anything before it's absolutely necessary. Because lazy.

Yeah, unfortunately before I read all this awesome advice, I already had my new tranny bolted up which was a huge pain in the ***. So it'll have to be next time.

Does the rear main seal see pressurized oil? Or is the leak only caused by crank case pressure?

Thanks!
