My car overheated a couple times. The first time when it happened I was sitting in traffic, I turned my air off, & it went back to normal. Just ignored it. Then it happened again after my car was sitting idle, I got in it to move it & noticed it was overheating again. My air was already off & I started smelling rubber burning. Keep in mind it was rainy this day so it wasn't the weather. Then the next day I went to look at it all of my fluids are good, so I started it to see more & by the time I got out the car and back under the hood the short radiator hose was very hot.

I'm hoping it's just the hose but I did a water test yesterday and I'm starting to think it's more than the hose.

 

I'd start by testing for a failed head gasket and radiator fan switch. Plenty of cases of those in these Civics. Look at the Sticky on head gaskets.
