Hey everyone,
I have a 94 civc that I just redid the head gasket on. I put everything back together and it won't crank. The alternator is spinning, there is oil and gas flowing bc i can smell it. The only possible thing i can think of would be either the starter or distributor. I took the cap off the distributor and ran a voltage tester on the coil, i got shocked but the meter didn't light up. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

 

You didn't put back one of the grounds. Check again.

 

I think you are saying it cranks normally but does not start. That means the starter is OK. The alternator is not involved in starting.

Also consider timing issues:
- Timing belt wrong.
- Spark wires on the cap in wrong order.
- DIstributor shaft engaged 180 degrees off.

Test the coil by taking the cap off, hold a grounded test wire about 1/2 inch from the coil output, and crank. Strong blue sparks should jump to the wire. Never let the coil fire into an open circuit such as having the cap or spark wires off with no grounded test wire.

 

Can you elaborate on what you mean by distributor shaft engaged 180 degrees off?
