Default Did my friend bend his valveS?

Hey guys, first time posting in the prelude forum.. but its not for me.. its for my friend.. He has a 97 prelude base model.. He taking me for a ride, wound up most of the gears..

When he shifted from 3-4, he somehow put it in 2nd, possibly bending the valves?... After that.. it wouldnt idle right. it would sit at about 5000RPM and just drop until the car shut off..

We drove about 15 miles home, very slowly and carefully, got home, he was stressin pretty bad, went to turn the car on, and it idled just like it always had?

What do you guys think? Something was definately wrong with the car, idle was terrible until the car just shut off. Now it seems as if nothing happend? What you guys think.

so you're saying his engine runs JUST LIKE NORMAL now? That's very weird. Based on the first immediate symptoms he definately bent some valves...

i just talked to a friend of mine, and he said they might have been knocked loose, and then re-set?

That makes no sense. If a valve bends it bends, it doesn't reset.

If it idles choppy they are probably bent. Ususally you won't notice it at 60mph or anything.

Do a compression test or leakdown test, if the valve is bent you will have little compression

i dont think overreving the motor would cause that. check all your vaccum lines and reset the ecu. most the time bent valves are cause by the timting belt breakin or the timing being too much off. he could have burnt one but like my man said once its done it doesnt reset or anything.

Alright I just got back from his house again.. its weird, if he drives for a long time steadily, and then stops, it idles fine, but if he is in alot of stop and go situations, it starts to spudder, then after about 5 minutes of spuddering.. it will begin to die...

anyone?

how much do new valves installed cost?

It looks like he needs to visit a mechanic. You will have a real hard time diagnosing this problem online, much less fixing it.

Have a valve-adjustment done on his car....then check compression and leakdown. See if the symptoms are still there.

Experienced this in a type-r last night. Yes from what you described you have a fucked up valvetrain. When he mis-shifted into second did the tach wind out past redline? When this happens your engine spins so fast past redline not even an ecu will stop it. You float your vavles and will most likely need new valvetrain components. You may also need new pistons if you have valve chips on the dome. The slightest chip in a piston top will offset compression.

Are you kidding? misshift and over-rev is like the main cause of bent valves!

Anyways a leakdown test will tell you if there's a problem....
