Engine and transmission Swap, some Pre-Q's
Considering picking up an F23 (1998 ULEV) with about 167k on it. Already have a 5 speed tranmission from a 4th or 5th gen F22. Will this transmission bolt up correctly to the F23 or do I need to get a 6th gen manual trans? Also to my understanding. the F23 should be mostly plug and play electrically if I swap on some of the sensors and use the F22's intake and exhaust manifold from my existing 1994 EX. Just seeking a little info before I drop the cash on the other engine. The 5 speed swap is going to happen eventually whether or not I purchase this engine.
Check out my thread further down...I am doing the swap, but with the JDM version of the motor. I already have a 5 speed, so I am not doing that part of that swap. It is a fairly straightforward swap...
Definately noted the trials and tribulations, but still want to make sure that the F22 manual trans will work on the F23 (Probably will need the F23 flywheel)
Yes it will. The flywheels are interchangeable across the F Series motors. I am using a lightweight flywheel on mine. Is your current motor toasted? Do you have easy access to the motor you plan to use? I am sure someone will point out that there really isn't a huge performance gain to be had by this swap. For me it was a cheap route to getting my car functioning again. There just aren't low mileage F22's around anymore, and I picked mine up from an importer for 250 bucks. For the work, would I be better off with an H22? Sure, but it would also be more cash.
Current motor isnt toasted yet, but it leaking all over even after replacing several seals and rather noisy, plus having some oddball behavior after a timing belt change where it will idle along fine til it warms up and then when you come to a stop, it will idle along then you feel a heavy like "bump" and then it will idle along some more just fine and then go "bump" or "bump-bump" and then it will idle some more just fine and then repeat the "bump" feeling up to 3 times before idling on its merry way and then repeating it erratically . It has 235k on it and the motor Im looking to get has 167k and is like 5 years newer. In my area finding F22 motors are mixed and most of them are the result of being over heated or just needing a head gasket in general and I would prefer to do something only requiring a bit of maintanence. Engine swap isnt a big deal to me as Ive done it to both a Camry and a Ram and was planning one for my Civic before its accident. I do appreciate the input.
