1999 CR-V just dies, no warning
My 1999 CR-V recently died while I was driving it. No warning. I still had power to the lights and radio but the engine just shut off. It did this 3 or 4 times after diving about 10-15 minutes. Would start again after sitting for 20 minutes or so. Replaced the fuel pump, cleaned the fuel injectors, replaced the distributor cap, spark plugs and coil. Still an issue. Don't know what else to do. Any ideas?
Hi Bobn,
Sounds like your ignition control module is dying. This is a very common failure point on the 1st gen CR-Vs, as well as Civics and Integras of this time period. You'll find many threads on here laying out the same failure mode; vehicle runs when engine is cold, stalls when engine temps reach roughly normal, car runs again when cold. I'd imagine it has something to do with solder joints within the module cracking after years of heat cycling. Anyway, you were pretty damn close when you replaced your ignition coil, because the module is right in the distributor there next to it. The most important thing is to not buy a cheapie off Ebay or something for like 40 bucks. There are a whole lot of cheap, junky, Chinese ignition control module manufacturers selling product on the web, but you'll get very limited service life out of them. Honda is the best way to go, and I'm told there's a company called NEC which I guess is a fellow Japanese manufacturer that makes reputable ignition control modules. My '01 has 155k on it and I'm getting ready to replace the ICM as a precaution because I'm pretty sure it's original. After searching the web I found a company that sells Honda parts for less than most dealers, and the module was $209. I think that's where I'm going to put my money. I don't have a link to the site off-hand, but if you google something like "cheap honda parts" it should get you close.
Hope that helps!
