my buddy got a delsol with a GSR trans. It grinds 3rd so he ordered new syncros and sleeve. We tore the tranny down and everything actually looks in good shape. It was rebuilt with Syncrotech carbon syncros. The one thing we did find was that the two detent bolts seemed to be junk. the ball bearings were lodged into the bolt. They still move when you push in on them but they don't come apart.

Could this be causing the grinding or should we be looking elsewhere. This is our first time trying to do anything with a transmision

 

The reason the bolts are smashed into the end of the spring bolts is that they were torqued improperly (meaning too tight). New bolts are suggested, but this has nothing to do with your 3rd gear grind. Remember that there are three parts that contribute to a possible grind: The synchro, the slider, and the locking teeth on the selected gear itself. You are talking about replacing two of the three potential problem parts... so a 2 in 3 chance of solving the issue. Examine the teeth on the gear itself... if they have lost their peaks and appear rounded off and shiny... it may still grind, so unless you want to pull it back out and try again, you might want to go ahead and replace it now.

 

Yeah after being inside of it for 2 days we found that someone spent alot of time and money on the trans and they completely jacked it up putting it together. Every single bold was over torqued. It's a shame. It had syncrotech carbon syncros, quaife LSD.

When we were taking out the 3 10mm bolts that hold in the plate at the base of the shifter forks? One of them snapped inside the case.

The solution? He's trading the trans plus some money for a completely rebuilt ITR trans with Quaife LSD.

We did learn alot about the inside of transmissions along the way though
