I'm lookin to get an upgraded air intake for my 02 civic lx 1.7L manual. I've done some research and it says that the effectiveness of either varies by car. I was wondering if anyone would have any experience or input as to whether a cold air intake would be worth the extra money for my car, or if it doesn't make a noticeable difference enough to get one, and stick to short ram. thanks!
You'll see no discernible gain from any bolt-ons on the D17. So, it's really up to you what you want to purchase (if anything). The only changes you'll see will be auditory.
my car came with a short ram, I replaced it with the original intake system quickly. I would only ever use an intake of any sort if there was nothing available to fit the car/engine combo in the case of swapped cars.
Cold air intake is a myth. Go with a short ram, get the one from K&N which brings a heat shield. You will gain no power but it will sound nice and it also looks very nice under the hood. I gained a couple of ponies in my D17A2 by adding a CS Sports ceramic 4-1 header and a cat back exhaust. But very minimal. I heard that in order for you to feel a difference in power on a D17 you must upgrade to a Crower Cam either Stage 1 or upwards. Stage one you can just throw on without having to change anything else. Stage 2 and above you need valve springs and other stuff. Crower stage 1 is about $400 with shipping plus installation. For power either turbo or K20 swap is the way to go. Bit now we are talking a few grand. Just my humble 2 cents. That's my set up below.
I see, gotcha. so for future reference, say I get a swap to a k20, do you think there would there be any discernible difference between the two?
Difference in what? The K-series is mounted opposite the way of the D-series engines. So you won't be able to use the D17 intake at all. As for power gains, you will see some gains on the K-series when changing intakes.
