Upper ball joint not tight to knuckle.

Upper ball joint not tight to knuckle.
The upper ball joint was not tightened to spec and has warn the knuckle. Do i need to replace both the upper ball joint and knuckle or is the upper ball joint hard enough that only the knuckle was affected?
