Default 00 EX Auto Transmission Blew Up

Hey guys, I am in need of some advice.

I was on the way to work this morning doing about 65 on the freeway and I noticed that the car was in a really high gear. I tried putting it in neutral and going back into drive while I was still moving but it didn't do anything. Check engine light came on for P0730 Incorrect Gear Ratio, no other codes, D4 light not flashing. Pulled over and shut it off, could smell transmission fluid a little bit. Started it and put it in drive, took a few seconds to do anything but started pulling a little. Gave it a little gas and it was slipping bad, could only get to 25 or 30 mph. Limped home, got weaker and weaker but I made it back.

Sounds to me like one of the clutch packs is cooked? Just kind of weird, all of this happened suddenly like one second it was fine and next second it just gave out.

I'm trying to figure out if it would be cheaper to pull the trans and have it rebuild (probably easy to pull it out) or pull it out and just get a used one with lower miles form a junkyard or CL and just put that in.

Any advice is appreciated. I hate being without a car!

You don't sound like you're capable of rebuilding the auto. My suggestion to you is fine one, same make/model/yr, and just swap it in.

Yeah I'd rather not do it, I don't want to mess anything up. I just wanted to get some advice on what actually happened.

I'll start looking for a different one.

No way of telling without taking it apart. Clogged filters, low fluids, burnt clutch packs, stuck valves....alot of **** to inspect. If you don't have the time just replace it and put in fresh fluids. Follow the FSM if you've never done something like this before.
