Default 01 Accord DX not shifting into D4

I recently had an issue with my shifter cable coming loose. I got that fixed but now it won't shift into D4 and the green light for D won't come on. It will shift into P,N,D,1, and I think 3rd. 2nd doesn't do anything and D acts like it doesn't know it's there. I took the center console and kick panels off to work on the shifter cable. That's when I noticed the D light had went off (it was stuck in D when the cable came off). I don't see anything that could have come loose. Any ideas on what could be wrong? Seems like a weird issue. I'm not well versed in autos or Hondas.

There is a shift position sensor on the transmission. Make sure that's reading the same position as the shift selector in the car. There should be an aligning mark for neutral on it. Then attach the cable with the selector in neutral.

I don't see an aligning mark on mine. I get continuity for D4 but the light doesn't come on and it still acts like it isn't there. I also don't have the "click" when it's in the correct position like the manual says. I had to drive it home the other night and it seems like it has 2 and 3 not 1 and 3. Are these symptoms of the neutral safety switch dying or something else? Can the switch be malfunctioning and there still be continuity?

Seeing as the cable came loose, then you had this issue, it almost has to be a problem between what the transmission range switch says vs how you have the cable secured. (unless you damaged something) For example, if the range switch is in N but you attached the cable in D you'll be off. If you have the manual, use it to get the range switch (on the transmission) and the selector lever in N. Then tighten it all down. Whatever the range switch is on will be displayed on your dash. So align the range switch until the N on your cluster is on.
