Default Unique heat problems in car

I have a 98 integra, when I start the car without turning the heat on and let it idle the temp gauge will go to normal but when I turn the heat up temp gauge goes all the way down and heat coming iout is cool toa little bit of heat.No signs of visable leaks, rad is full and over flow is half way.I don't have access to a hose so if I were to boil water and pour it threw the upper radiator hose into the engine would that help out?or does the rad and heater both need a flush?

My guess is maybe your thermostat is getting stuck partially open - Integras are prone to this from what I understand. I have a similar problem except my car never really gets into the normal temperature range at all when it's cold outside. (Edit: my car is also a 98 Integra btw)

I forgot to ad that when I put the car in gear and drive the temp gauge then goes all the way to cold as if the car isn't even on, and the air coming out is still cool but not hot.
So you think it might be the temp gauge then?

I had a similar problem in my car. It would take 15-20 minutes for the water temperature to reach operating levels in the cold and it would go right back down if you turned on the heater. In your case when you drive you're forcing cold air through the radiator which keeps letting cold water back into the block causing it to cool back down. The solution is to replace the thermostat, a new OEM one that includes the gasket is less than $30.

No not the temperature gauge or any of that - the thermostat (the thing that restricts the flow of coolant until the engine warms up).

I have also heard that if you're going to replace it, you should get the OEM one from Honda. Apparently aftermarket ones don't always open and close to spec, and so you can end up replacing it and still have the same problem... or an even worse problem if it opens at too high of a temperature, because then you get overheating instead of 'overcooling'.

Replace the thermostat as mentioned get an OEM one or at least a good quality one, not the cheapest one from the auto parts store. 94
