Default VIN decoding D17A1 engine?

I just bought an engine from a salvage yard for a 2005 Civic LX. Has not been delivered, but the paperwork I received is suspect at best. According to the VIN number they gave me, it comes back as a 2002 Civic EX. Before I paid, the guy I dealt with confirmed that this is a non-VTEC engine with EGR. Based on it being an EX model according to the VIN number it can't possibly be non-VTEC. It COULD be EGR since it is a VTEC motor but if it is not VTEC then it can't possibly have EGR, at least not if it's an '02.
Given that I'm probably dealing with fraudulent paperwork (I didn't look up the VIN number until the day after I paid for it), I'm guessing that this guy finally got his hands on the engine (sourced from another area junkyard) and realized that it was a VTEC engine. So God only knows what he's going to deliver to me. On the B and K blocks you can see the VIN tag on the block above the oil pan, but on the D17A1? Is it there? If not, can the numbers stamped on the block (below "D17A1") be decoded somehow?
