Questions Regarding Radiator Coolant Change - 2014 Civic
I am near 45,000 miles on my 1.8L Civic EX and the dealership said it is time to replace the antifreeze. If you do it now they stated you will not need a flush later. If this is true is there a good link for doing this change or instructions for the 1.8 and this generation of Honda Civic? I also have been told you can wait til 80,000 miles and not have to do a flush. The main thing I have heard is use the Honda Coolant only for this model. Please help clarify.
Using OEM Honda coolant is best whenever possible, but not the only option. The issue with using other coolants is that some brands contain additives that could be corrosive to the radiator or other components, and don't allow them to be combined with other coolant brands/blends. So, in this case, it's always best to use OEM coolant.
This isn't just about mileage. Mileage is a general gauge as to when certain service maintenance should be performed, but it's not the only gauge. Your use and abuse of the car is what really determines when it is best to be changed. In this case, 45,000 of daily commutes doesn't necessarily require a flush or coolant replacement. You can simply add coolant to the coolant reservoir (Never add tap water!!) and keep going until you feel a change is needed.
When in doubt, look to your service manual. It typically has guidelines as to when to change certain fluids, and spaces to put the mileage as to when you last changed it.
Look at general honda maintenance videos as to how to drain and flush. These are basics. If you need a video for how to do this step-by-step, it may be best to go to a professional and have it done.
The best online source for basic Honda maintenance is Eric "The Car Guy". He has not only videos but an entire book as to what you need to do to keep your civic in top condition.
