Default EG6 temperature guage?

Just picked up an EG6 yesterday, love it! But the temperature guage will take awhile to get to normal operating temperature and then after a bit it'll go back to cold and stay there for awhile, then back to normal and back to cold again, just keeps doing it. The guy I bought it off of says that the thermostat opens wider and more often because there's a lot of traffic in Japan so it helps to not over heat. Said the thermostat just has a different temperature rating. And if it helps it has the original B16A and the weather around here is cold.

Put in a stock thermostat. Over-cooling the engine is not doing it any favors.

If the gauge drops all the way to cold even though the engine is still hot, the wire on the sending unit (screwed into the end of the head underneath the distributor) could be loose. Or of course the gauge head itself could be bad.

Okay I'll check that wire out. And if I were to go into Honda and ask for a thermostat, what would I get? One for a B16 or is any b series thermostat compatible? Thanks man, really don't want anything to happen to this car. It's a dream come true haha.

buyer beware, no one changes a thermostat to a different one unless there is a known issue. he may have had a hot reading from a poorly grounded wire so go there first and put a stock b16 stat back in. work from known parts not just hearsay of the previous owner

No. But I loved that car in that stage, it was a different style then what I'm doing with the EG6, just because I like low cars and camber doesn't mean I only like that. That sedan isn't low like that anymore either and the hatch definitely isn't going to be :p

Put in a new thermostat and bled the system and its all working good. But tonight I was sitting parked with the car running for a little bit and the temperature guage got hot, any idea why that'd be?

if air is present the sensor gets cooled, or if its steam it reads higher, basically air in the system makes the temp swing, especially if it goes to cool. keep the heater on full and make sure you have hot air, if it to goes cold then pull over and let it cool, top up the fluid and leave the cap slightly undone and get ti to somewhere to do a leakdown test. Air in the system is either being sucked in for en external joint at best, at worst its coming from a head headgasket failure, neither one is overly bad to fix, but it's nice to know which one it is. By leaving the cap backed off it will stop the water from pressurizing and the air will bleed out, problem with that water needs to be pressurized to increase it's boiling point so it may overflow a bit with increased expansion. but far safer than a pressurized system with the cap done up
