Exedy Clutch Questions
I'm after a new clutch for my XSi, I've heard that the Exedy organic clutch kit would be good for my application, It's going to be a daily driver with occasional trip to the drag strip.
Do you think this one would suit? does anyone know the part numbers for the organic kit? I've got a JDM B16A1 with S1 tranny.

I've got the Excedy Organic clutch kit with an S1 tranny on my LS. I'm not too happy with it, but then again my 300 mile break-in could be a culprit. Its got a great price and IMO about the same as a stock clutch. A lot of people under estimate a stock clutch, but they hold up pretty well. If you plan to be putting out a lot of power one day, I would save up your pennies for a higher quality clutch.
But from the sounds of it the Excedy should suit you fine!

I don't know the part number for your car, but I bought one and after the break-in (500 miles of reasonable driving) the Exedy is worth the cash, grabs well, has a similar feel to stock, and was cheap. I drive long distances, beat the sh*t out of it occassionally, and go to the track now and then. This clutch is fine for this stuff. I didn't want a stage 3/4 monster.
Also, change out the flywheel to something lighter. Worth it. I was able to put in a Type R flywheel (15 lbs vs. 18 lbs) and the 3 pounds was a good "gain" car is alot snappier. I personally wouldn't go really light for a daily driver.
BTW: The bearing that comes with the Exedy kit is identical to the Honda bearing, don't worry about getting the "Honda" one...

Thanks guys. At the moment I have CTR cams, CAI and exhaust, Type R header coming soon. Does the organic kit have a heavier pressure plate? and how much does one go for over there? (I'll have to convert to $NZ)
The clamping force of the plate is 32% over stock. (organic)
I paid $265 shipped in USA. Includes disc, plate, throwout bearing, no tool.
They're from Japan... you should get a good deal in NZ.

i think this clutch is very good for the money. it grips really well for a street clutch. ive taken my car to the strip a few times and it held up fine there. just make sure to break it in.
on thing it has over clutchmasters is a better pedal feel. clutchmasters are like youre pushing nothing to the ground. the pedal has a little more spring that stock. very nice for under 300 dollars.

if you go with the exedy i highly reccommend pairing it up with a lightened flywheel, it holds just fine in a gsr until you redline 3rd and 4th. I have to double clutch t t o get it into fourth and fifth without grinding whe i redline it becasue i am using a stock flywheel.

never had the problem with those gears until i installed the organic clutch. so i seriosly doubt it is the synchros. every one always says its the synchros, i believe it has something to do with the 180hp the car is pushing out at the wheels.
It's not the flywheel... when the clutch is disengaged, the gearbox is "free" and has absolutely nothing to do w/ the flywheel. The engagement on the Exedy isn't forceful enough over stock to cause this, and it's sprung, which minimizes any harsh effects.
I run over 180 HP and an Exedy and do not have any of the symptoms you have.
Remember that you're not using a 5 liter Mustang tranny. Honda built the transmission to handle stock hp. When you are into any gear, you need to make deliberate shifts. I'm not knocking your driving, simply saying that these transmissions, the way we drive, are subject to abuse and will not feel like they did at 20,000 miles.

no i'm saying "the clutch doen'st have enought grab for a stock flywheel at redline in third and fourth to handle stoppng the tranny properly. It has to be double clutched to get it into fourth and fifth when redlined fromthe revious gears. but i understand the older the car gets the less the tranny will work properly.
