Icon5 Sticky Shifter button

Hey guys!!
So im wondering if anyone knows why the button on my shifter of my 2009 Honda Civic LX Automatic transmission gets stuck? when I apply the brakes the button stays locked, I have to try and try to apply the brakes and then push the button at the same time. Sometimes it clicks in after only a few tries other times it takes several minutes to get it out of park. Can anyone tell me why this might be doing this?

First check to see that the plastic brake pedal stopper pad is intact and not damaged. If the pad is not damaged, then issue can possibly be with the brake pedal position switch.
