Ok, so I am working on doing a similar setup to the Sportcar Motion Integra that runs a 17x8.5" setup on a 245 series tire. I haven't seen any walk through's or in-depth looks of how/what actually needs done besides "keyboard warrior" chat. So I thought I would share my step by step process as I go. It seems rather simple if you are willing to do some work, cut a little bit and have the right offset, as well as not being super low. I don't plan on this being a 4x4 by any means but, I do want to try to make it a fit that in my opinion is just right. I decided to go with a slightly less aggressive attempt as this isn't a track only car. I ordered a set of 17x8 with a +40 offset to start with and a 235/40/17 tire. I will share as I go through the process leading up to the my track day at Atlanta Motorsports Park and my experience going from 205's on a 15" wheel to a bigger setup. keep in mind this is on a 340hp turbo setup, thats why im ok with adding some wheel/tire weight.
just getting an idea of what may need done before tires go on. Also the next picture worried me a bit until I did this. its about -1 Degree camber there so no worries.
yikes! lol
going from 205 615k's to 235 NT-05's
I will post steps as I go through them but for now, here are some pictures of what clearances you would actually be working with, with this wheel size.
clearance with the rear trailing is going to be the biggest issue for this. It clears by about 5mm right now but im looking at having to notch the trailing arm by about 1/4" deep by 2.5" wide to clear the tire.
here is a pic of the Sportcar Motion Integra if you haven't seen it.
Ok so everything fit rather well. I didnt have to notch the rear trailing arm surprisingly. It is very tight but has about 3mm of clearance.
I did a little grinding to give some breather room.
First attempt before rolling fenders or adjusting camber or ride height.
Another pic with the tires on of the tiny bit of clearance. Hard to get a good angle but it spins without issue.
The front has issues being that low with full wheel turn as well as making fun noises when hitting and bump in the road. Nothing crazy just rolled it and pulled it out a touch.
Post roll on the front.
This is at about -1.8 rear and -1 degree front.
So the breakdown of this is, with a good fender roll a little bit of hammer banging out a couple inner fender well spots and maybe some grinding if you feel necessary...a 235 tire can fit without a huge deal. I raised the car about a full inch higher and may even bring it down once I get the alignment sheet. You can throw a little more camber at it and sit it down a bit more. For me though this is just about perfect. No scrub noises and should be able to take the cornering speed without an issue. +40 on an 8" wheel is about as perfect as you can get if you are looking to put some wider rubber to the ground and not look like a 4x4!
Thanks for posting this. I've got some 17x8 +38 that I want to fit with a 235/40 and was wondering about fitment. I talked to the Loi Spec guys who run a 255/40 up front and he mentioned having to modify the pinch weld above the tire. Granted a 255/40 is a 25 inch tire, but it might be something to keep in mind. I'm not too concerned with gearing with the taller tires, I'm running a built K20 with a 5.1 final drive.
Yeah I actually haven't had an issue with them as far as hitting the pinch weld but I do plan on eventually trying a 245 or 255 so I know small things like that will have to be looked at. I would think you could take off about a 1/4 or half inch or just bend it in like a fender roll syle.
I haven't been able to really hit any curves yet, but I have played a little and can definitely tell there will be a vast difference in my corner speeds!
