Default Garrett T3 60-1 standard or Turbonetics GT-K 325?

Someone is selling me garrett 60-1 turbo for dirt cheap . But just wondering is this the right turbo for my set up? Looking for some opinion before i go a buy the wrong turbo. I am aiming for around 450hp, but i also would like something with a nice spool up .
My setup lsv / Gsr head
10.1:1 pistons , skunk 2 tuner 1 cams , skunk 2 head package.

There are definitely better options for spooling than the 60-1 at that power level.

60-1 will make the power you want. Its just a little bit bigger for whant you want but if its in good condition get it.Youll be happy.
Sometimes quick boost is overated. If you want a quick spooling/cheap turbo that will make the job done but with higher boost is the t04e 50 trim.
But since you dont have a b16, id use the 60-1.

I like the misconception that Holset's are simply budget turbos and thats it.

Other than yourself, I'm usually the only one who suggests them as an alternative to the usual. Furthermore, even though I've pointed out that they are mostly budget choices, I have never downplayed their capabilities. Have attempted to do the opposite as a matter of fact, I've seen some extremely impressive builds using them.

Yes. Even when modified as Travisbiggie has done in his pictorial example

If memory serves me right, the map for the 60-1 is quite narrow and not a good choice as theres many better suited for the power goal.

The Holset thread has alot of info.

And me LOL, both our cars run Holset turbo's and I've supplied many units to sport compact customers here in South Africa. For 450 hp a HY35 will be a great turbo if you can find a good one and outperform the 60-1 particularly in spool and response.

Does anyone have any experience with a turbonetics T3/ T4E 5454 ? I been offered a brand new one for 400$!!! Im trying to find some in my budget i dont want to spend moee then 700 on a turbo alone. My question really is how os the spool on these? I would imagine they spool pretty quick since there are a pretty small turbo

Don't have experience with that unit but the specs should fit what you wanting to do as its within the T3/T04E family that were a mainstay on turbo Hondas before more modern technology turbos came along. You'll have a much better powerband with this Turbonetics vs the 60-1 but you'll need 93 octane as a minimum.

According to Go Autoworks site, this unit is rated at 530 hp but they refer to a billet wheel there as part of the T-GA lineup. Be careful that you not being sold an old school 54 trim T3/T04E painted to look like a newer turbo. The old school 50/54/57 trim turbos are only good for mid 400's not the 530 as quoted for the billet T-GA...

Larger turbo's make higher 'pump gas' numbers easier, and at lower boost but sacrifice response and usable rpm band in order to do so, smaller turbo's spool earlier but need higher boost to make a target power level and require high octane in order to support the higher IAT's and reduced flow rate that this brings.

I've ran the TGA billet 5454 on a stock b20v on 8psi I made 324. On my built b16 it made 319 at 15psi. Don't know if that helps but it seems to spool pretty quick for me. Also it came with a polished comp housing not black.

That's not the T-GA lineup if they're all billet. Its obvious that wheel is cast

That is the standard GTK 325 series using their F1-54 exhaust wheel, and E-46 54 trim cast wheel... The T-GA are similar to the Billiet Turbonetics GTK series, with Go-Autoworks having a few additional options available that others can't get. The profiles between the cast GTK and the T-GA/Billet GTK series is rather subtle, and for this size is not noticeable. The cast wheel is good to about low 400ish whp (due to the smaller exhaust wheel, although it is an F1 series exhaust wheel which is much improved over the Garrett 57mm wheel). This is definitely an improvement over a 60-1 in terms of responsiveness and use. You want to be sure that the Black GTK is in good shape, but luckily they can be upgraded, and have easier fitment for most setups. T04B compressor cover is what is standard with this sized GT-K, and would work well with a good starter kit.

As long as it is in good shape internally, I think it's a better bet for one not wanting to spend over $700. Even against a Holset. The GTK series can also be sent into Turbonetics for inspection free of charge (IIRC) as long as the plate tags are still on it. You would just pay shipping to and from the facility. Can't do that with a Holset.

Personally, I'd jump on the deal considering it is brand new for that price.. Too bad they aren't water cooled.

Like I stated. It is... and it isn't.

For those not in "the know": The T-GA lineup is part of the Turbonetics Billet GT-K line up that is used. Go-Autoworks used their influence with Turbonetics to release a few versions that were more for their market and not the usual Turbonetics GT-K billet series line up. (Basically they have some in-between and smaller sizes to create a better match to their kits than the Precision or BEP units that they also market) . The GT-K that you see in black housings with the Cast wheels were a previous release from 2008 of Turbonetics using the last of their cast wheels in a nicer package to sell. The cast wheel program officially ended in 2014, after they decided to join other competitors and strictly manufacture (or have manufactured, however you'd like to put it) their billet wheel line.

Don't get it wrong, they still work. Just because it's billet doesn't automatically mean it's better. (you know that already ). I do think that as much as Holset does deserve it's just due as a good consideration, there's just too much to try and integrate into a standard "kit" that the OP is looking for, especially if he doesn't have the resources and mechanical inclination to search and modify these changes to fit. This is why you see a very good influx of them on eBay and other sources; so that people can get them, then send them to other 3rd party vendors to modify and rebalance.. It's win-win, but it comes at a price of time, money and a good amount of shipping if you don't have good local sources. Not to mention, it's a been a bit more difficult in recent years to get an exact model of what you had, if and when it goes down and can't be repaired. But really those areas, plus they aren't water cooled are the only cons to getting the Holset.

Thanx for enlightening us all (as usual) The Shodan.
