Neck collar necessary?
I'm looking into the whole helmet, auto-x deal and came across the nomex neck collars.
I can see the idea behind it is great, but being on a tight budget, i'm looking at 100 dollar helmets. Is it really necessary I get a 70 dollar neck collar?

If you're gonna do Solo2, you can probably get away with not having it. You're not going fast enough to have a proper crash. You also may not experience high lateral loads on the neck. However, these are very general statements. It's up to you. It's your safety on the line. I would think a $70 horseshoe collar would be a wise investment.
That said, I Solo2 without one. But I only do about 2-5 events a year and I'm not going for points so I don't really compete ***** out. But if I was doing multiple events all the time, I would definitely get one.

neck collar really saved me from some serious whiplash about 4 years ago when I was rear ended hard coming into turn 1 at Summit during the Turkey Bowl. this in turn pushed me hard into the pileup which had occurred during the start of the race. My head/body snapped forward and back hard enough to bend the steering column/wheel. I broke my thumb and probably tore something in my upper shoulder (never went to see Dr.). But no stiff neck/whiplash at all.
I bought the collar 5 days before that wreck. Don't really know why...
Two years before that I had a crash during a drivers ed (my fault on this one). No collar. Mega mega stiff; couldn't turn my head for about 5 days after that one. Very agonizing.
Get the collar. its worth it. And I think mine was around $30 or $40 from Racers Wholesale.

I've seen enough crashes and been in 2 now. I'm ditching the collar in favor of either a HANS or the ISAAC. Hey Phatty, where you at?

What are those? I see you guys do road racing and stuff, but necessary for solo II?
It only took one hard collision before I decided never to go out on the track without a neck collar again. Even with a girlfriend who was a massage therapist, and was there at the track to help me immediately, my neck was VERY sore for several days.

I had been wondering about the same thing too. I think I'll get one too for that price. Any preference for any particular brand? I am thinking, Simpson, Sparco, or OMP. thanks.
The have some basic HJC Snell2000 or something like that Motorcycle helmets for about 100-150.
I don't intend on road racing or installing a cage in my car. Just Auto-x and a motorcycle helmet is all I really need, don't need any SA helmets just yet.
Btw, thanks guys. I checked racerwholesale and they have nomex neck collars for 20 bucks or was it 30? I will get that along with the helmet when spring comes along.
