How to add 12V outlet? The easist way...
Hello guys,
I have a 1991 civic. It came without 12V outlet. It is so inconvineint everytime when I have to use GPS i have to carrry a jumpstart with me just to power the GPS. I want to add a 12V outlet to it. I am sure there are many ways of doing it. I want to know the easiest way to do it.
Attached is a picture of the dash panel. Where to add the outlet? 1 or 2? How to get the power? Get wire from the battery or from the existing wire in cab? Please help!

Knowing Honda, I suspect the wiring for the 12v plug is back there already. You should just remove the panel and see if the plug is there.
Easiest thing will be stock location with an Si wiring harness. It'll plug in.
The second option is using one of the accessory power outs in the fusebox. Easy spade plug and wiring. One of them also is continuous power, even without the key on.
Pretty easy to do either way.

(sigh, my controls have taken a beating)
i like it here.
i went thru the trouble of using an Si lighted outlet. it just barely fits with the lighting fixture tilted diagonally.

i also extended the wiring harness, but you really dont have to. on second observation, i could have just separated the male plug wires (to the chassis harness) from the stereo harness and just use the stock harness. but heres a view of the harness i used anyway. it turns out way too long too. but hey, it works.

I am above legal drinking age. LOL
I am wondering if there is any existing connectors, fuses or wires that I can hook up to for 12V inside the cab. I mean obviously you can run wires from battery to the dash panel. But that seems to be a lot of work and you will have to fish wires through the firewall..

I was just curious because as I get older I take things for granted sometimes. As it relates to your thread I was wondering if maybe you haven't seen a lighter in a car before (my wife's Fit doesn't have one but has basically the same thing just called 12v outlet). I chose location 2 because that is the factory spot for that and as suggested by "kp" there is a good chance the wiring is already there.
Off subject, taking things for granted reminds me of the time my buddy bought a CRX as a daily and took his soon for a ride. His son had no idea how to open the window.

Get a power outlet instead of a lighter, [they are different] a lighter does not always work on all "power supplies".
As mentioned wiring should be there, [acc.] if you want a constant 12V output, [hot at all times] use the free pins, [also as mentioned] on the under dash fuse box. 94

As for position 1, it is a plastic piece that can come off easily. It makes me think maybe I can mount something on there. But it is in an akward position for power outlet.... It is more suitable for mounting a switch... like push start button kind of things....

Hey Tyson. Thanks for the picture.
The pro of mounting it on location 1 is you don't have to take of panels.
Location 2 requires taking off the dash panel, or center console, I should say././. Well.. Maybe the center console piece is easy to take off... Anybody one how to take it off?
Where you get power from?
the power plug is behind the console, just like the radio plug if your car didnt come with a radio. you just need the harness, like i said.
you dont know how to take the console out? did you do any research, like download the shop manual? have you even tried? its not hard, and not hard to figure out. you just need a screwdriver. give it a try.... i assume anyone can do this.
the square panel is fine. its not better, just worked for me since i removed the stock location for a more useful cup holder. then i needed to start charging my phone (it was a long time ago) so i had to put something back in.

Thank you Tyson.
I just took of the center console. It is like you said, it is not that difficult. Theres only four screws...
So now I see a bunch of wires... and a black square box and a gray tube (fuse?) I guess that's power for the audio Now which wires should I get power from?
Thanks in advance
White plug above black box should be the lighter harness plug,

I just finished it. I get power from the white connector. Only thing is it's a 4 pin connector. I found out two pins that carried 12V power... I don't know what the other two pins do... I don't care...
Now I can use GPS while driving/.// Thank you Honda-Tech for PIMPING MY RIDE...
There's two powered wires, 1 for cig. 1 for lighted vanity ring lightbulb. I would make sure to use the larger wire one. I'm assuming you did.
