Just ran into this issue last night.
I never seen this happen before on a Honda.
Starts to crank, then stops, and starter just spins and whines.
I cut the ign. Off but the starter stays on and keeps spinning until I disconnect the battery.

I did alot of searching, but found no answers...
If it's just a bad starter then, lmk, but I'm hoping that it's nothing worse.

Update, pulled starter, got it checked out at Autozone. FAILED.

 

Update again, took back for exchange, Autozone tested GOOD this time.. WTF

Reinstalled, cranked up 3 in row with no problems... Uhh, SMH...

 

Did it again, constantly spins, even with the car off and key out.

Back to Autozone, finally got a new one, (after a little debating and such)

Car cranks up and runs fine now.

 

When it is "spinning" unplug the starter lead from the starter, if the spinning stops, check the starter relay, [manual transmission]. 94
