Default Remote start on a EF?

I am thinking of adding a remote start on my base 91 ef. Looks like you will have to hack the ignition switch. Who have done that?

Had that. Was a feature in the alarm I had.
Yes, you need to cut into ignition wires. Likely, you will tap into the brake switch wire as well.

You do not have to "hack" into the ign. harness or any other lead, although there are a number of connections that have to be made to the stock harness, [including ign. harness] and brake switch, as mentioned.

Every lead that you have to connect a remote start harness to, has a plug with pins in it at some point, eg; plug at the end of ign. switch harness, a pin in a plug can be de-pinned, and the remote start harness lead can be soldered to the shank of the pin and then the pin repined into the plug, no hacking needed.

Yes it takes longer but worth it in the end.

I get a little more ****, I will "unwrap" the top crimp, [crimped to hold the insulation] and "cut" away the insulation, from the crimp point down then parallel the remote start lead and re-crimp to hold them tight together and solder the lead and shank together, [not the crimp] makes for a bullet proof connection that can easily be re-pinned into plug, and no need to shrink tube or make a mess with tape. 94

Which brand of RS do you recommend? I only need a very basic one to satisfy my need of starting the car in cold Michigan winter...

Is your car an auto or manual?

Not sure what difference it would make if you had an auto or a manual. The kits come with directions for the strange steps taken for the manual trans owner to do as an extra precaution to help make sure the car is in neutral when you leave it.
Accidently leaving it in gear and attempting to remote start could be entertaining to watch. Especially if the car hops into a wall or another car.

What 4drEF said, I have seen it, a front wheel car will start in gear and drag the rear wheels until the car hits something, especially in the winter, as engine RPMs will be high on a cold start.

There are lots of good remote starts for manual transmission cars, from inexpensive Auto Start, Cold Start and others, to top quality Compustars. 94

With manual cars you have to set the remote start everytimg you get out of the car with certain alarms.
