Default How many years are compatible?

Hello my friend bought a 97 accord last year with about 360K on it, and the crankshaft has snapped due a problem with oil not getting to all parts of the engine, doesn't seem it could be avoided since this car was very well kept. He would consider replacing the engine if he can find a good deal. He wants to know what other model years around it have a compatible engine. I believe he said it's a non-VTEC engine.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If it is non VTEC then it is an F22B2.
'96/'97 would be a direct bolt in.
'94/'95 is very similar, but the oil pump housing does not have the provisions for the crank sensors used on the '96/'97 engines.

This question is more for MAD_MIKE:

Since he wants to replace it with another engine, could he drop in a 96/97 VTEC engine and still retains a direct bolt-in aspect of the engine swap?

I was just thinking about more choices.

The engine would drop in. But would not run properly, as the car does not have the provisions for VTEC. It would require the proper ECU with the engine, along with some wiring modifications to get everything to run properly.

As far as a direct bolt in, any F22B2 from a DX or LX trim 96/97 Accord will work. It should not be hard to find one at all.

Pretty much this.
A complete engine(with intake/exhaust/wiring and PCM) would be needed to make it work properly.

Yup.
Importers around here seem to carry the 96/97s more than 94/95. Can use the 96/97 in a 94/95, but not 94/95 in a 96/97.
If he is desperate there is also the F22B6 from the Ody. Although it may not have the lo-end grunt found in the F22B2, it will run nicely at highway speeds.
