Morning lads.

We were wanting to make our EG coupe a little more aerodynamic on the race track. So we decided to cut the back off and start fabbing things up to see what happens. Not gonna lie, I IMMEDIATELY regretted cutting the back off the car. But if we could find a few more mph at the end of a long straight, it would be worth it.

Let's see how this goes. I'm a little behind on posting pics, so if some of you know what happens next... don't be a spoiler...

Kind of thinking it would be cool, and useful later from a repair perspective, if we used something like the hatch rear bumper cover. It looks to shorten the car body up about a foot.



Looks like if we use some of these rust repair panels off the hatch, we might be able to fully adapt the hatch bumper cover onto the coupe.

OP, if haven't visited ecomodders.com take a look. Find the diagram for the ideal aerodynamic shape and overlay it onto your car. It'll get you a lot closer to your goal and make you effort worth while.

Started building the pieces at the very back of the chassis between the tail lights. the car is wider closer to the tires than it is at the very back, so we had to widen those pieces about 10"



This piece is not a diffuser, it's the new floor plate where the old tire well was. It will eventually be the roof, over the area where the diffuser will be.

lot of mock up here. Sadly, it's just sitting there, no infrastructure to hold it in place. But the idea is coming around. The original C-pillars are back on, but moved in about 8" per side at the back.

 

What's the difference in aerodynamics between a track car and a hyper miler?

So you're chopping up your car and guessing at what shape is more aerodynamic than it previously was?! Kentucky windage.

Difference in the two is not having that 8 foot long kammback hanging out the rear.

Chopping might not be the right word. it implies a lack of quality on the finished product. BUT, you never know. time will tell how this turns out. If when we are done it looks like a production car again, I'll call that a win.

Think of it more as a restyle. I loaned out my wind tunnel , so there's a bit of good old fashioned guessing and some copying of ideas off of existing production cars. But relatively informed decisions. Guess we'll see.

Ended up having to make my own C-pillers. Old trunk lid is now the rear package tray.

where everything met up, looks hella-rough. But it's very close, won't take much filler. filled gas door. it'll get a quick flip race lid, later

Welded in, filed down and metal worked, ready for primer.

 

starting to look interesting back there. you can also better see how the old trunk lid is now the package tray.

 

interesting idea, and credit to you for attempting it but it kind of just looks like it's ending up like a crx's rear end haha, not that that's a bad thing at all.
also since the car is already caged i would have assumed if you're going for increased aero and reduced weight it would be more effective to create a tube-frame rear end and then make a fibreglass rear end fascia/cover that slips over/attaches to the tube-frame? just my thoughts

 

certain rules preclude what we can do with tubing. Depends on what organization you race with.

I had thought about trying to graft a CRX hatch onto it. I didn't feel it was as smooth aerodynamically in regards as to how the air from the sides of the car was disposed of. and the CRX hatch is considerably wider than the new C-pillers and roof line at the back. (it'll make more sense when you see it further along)

also, because we did this to a coupe, instead of something like a CRX or a Hatch, we have more weight on the front wheels because I've shortened the body on a longer car. I'll have changed the weight bias with more on the front tires. (traction) all things being similar, I'll have more weight on the front tires than guys with a hatchback even if the cars weigh the same.

because only high hp cars can roll? google image "vehicle rollover", corollas, cobalts, etc. happens a lot, even more in racing.

 

Not exactly. More like a Speedfactory tuned F23. I built the mounts, etc. I have had people that don't know Honda think it's a D-series because the F23 is a single cam. i don't bother to correct them.

Also, sanctioning bodies require a cage. We road race the car in heavy traffic. I can't imagine going 125-135 at the end of a straight, door handle to door handle without one.
