Icon5 Mods for F23A1?

Hey guys, im working on rebuilding an F23A1 and wanna put some kick in it when it goes in the car. what are some things that I can do to get a little more *** of of this motor besides boost it, im not wanting to venture into that at the moment lol. I was thinking things as far as pistions, port and polish, throttle body etc.. im sorta green in this area so i just need a little advice.
Thanks Accord Fam!!

What are your goals and what is your budget?

With the engine out of the chassis. Basic maintenance would be a start, replace old gaskets and seals.

Intake, header and exhaust with a regrind camshaft and tunable EMS is about the best bang for your buck if you have a lower budget. I/H/E if it is extremely low!

As far as the SOHC F series engine go, the F23 has the best intake manifold and throttle body set up. There are no OEM parts that will help out here. send your F23 throttle body to Maxbore and port match the intake manifold would be the cheapest upgrade for manifold and throttle body.

Not much to be had porting and polishing these cylinder heads unless you are looking to go for a full build and raise compression.

Check out some of the current F23 builds using K20 pistons.

lol im just gonna come to you with my questions Ghost,

I dont really have much of a budget honestly, like i said this is my first rebuild so im just kind of playing around with it. I planned on replacing all the gaskets and piston rings.
I did a little research on the Balance shaft delete kits but honestly dont know what the advantages are.
On the throttle body, they will be matching the body to the IM?

Was this engine burning oil or low on compression when you bought it? May be ok to install this engine without breaking into the bottom end if it has good compression and doesn't burn oil. How many miles on it?

There are no big gains to doing the balance shaft delete on a daily driven street car. Balance shaft delete is done when you are trying to squeeze that extra tenth of a second in a quarter mile drag race.

If you send them the intake manifold as well as the throttle body they will match it. At a cost. I think it's $150 for the throttle body and an extra $50 for the intake manifold porting + shipping the items to them. it's not a cheap mod ether. it's cheaper than an aftermarket throttle body and intake manifold though.

I dont belive so, its got a good amount of miles on it (175xxx roughly).
Thats whats pushing me to do a rebuild, iv heard the motor run, its quiet, it may need a timing belt, water pump etc.
I just looked them up i will definately be sending the IM and TB to them its innexpensive and effective.

Timing belt, water pump, seals and gaskets are a must.

Only thing with busting into the block is that you are talking about a complete engine gasket kit and both rod and crank bearings as well. If you are going this far you might as well have a machine shop take a look at it and see if it requires a hone or possible machining if it is out of spec. Call around to local machine shops and see what they charge.

If you have the tools you could save some cash by stripping the block down yourself.

so you think getting the TB and IM done, new top end gaskets and what not, a good header, and maybe a good valve tune would do the motor justice?

Chrisnick had some really good results porting his intake manifold on the F23. It filled in the top end of the torque curve and made a little more power everywhere else.

Shaving the head has always been a method of leveling the head surface and at the same time raising compression, so for and F23A1, how much could you take off the head surface?

He went a bit further with the porting process. He ported the lower intake manifold runners as well.

Here is his F23A1 thread in the All Motor section; https://honda-tech.com/all-motor-nat...eline-3264896/

Lower runners are basically untouched. Gasket matched the opening and ported/gutted the plenum. There's still TONS of meat left in the plenum for larger runner openings and I can shorten the runners another 2-3".

Just saw this thread. I'm making about as much power as you can on a factory F23a1 longblock with purely bolt ons. Its a VERY fun street car with the M2F4 trans. The torque curve/gearing makes it just as quick as cars making 30-40whp more peak power(read: modded k20/h22 cars) until higher speeds. Truthfully, I haven't had a recent run in with an H22 car, but it did run 15.05's@91mph like it's duty in life before the ported lower, retune, clutch, and trans(was on an Accord trans).

The F23A1 is a seriously potent engine. I'll see what more I can get out of it with a head shave, better header, cam, and e85 by the end of the year. I'll have times with the current setup within a month. I'm guessing solid mid-low 14's with the way the car feels. It just gets out of the hole like a scalded cat, so much fun on launch control.

k20 pistons
free up some rotating mass with kstuned balanced shaft delete kit, lightened flywheel, underdrive pulley kit, these will give you quicker revs
port and polish intake manifold
h23/22 throttle body larger tb than f series
larger injectors/ higher flow rates than your oem more air needs more fuel at higher speeds, make sure theyll match up peak and hold type or saturated plenty of swappable injectors to choose from
strapped on cash get parts from an auto salvage lot, in my area we have a pick and pull, lots of decent aftermarket parts come through there without the high price tags
