I have a 1988 accord lxi didnt pass smog hmmmm smog dude says emmisions pass but he dont see timing marks so im asking What To Do? Also made my own marks that didnt stay for the smog

 

Where are your timing marks supposed to be located?

If on the crank there should be a pointer on the engine and the crank should have four timing marks. One for TDC)white) and three for ignition timing(red). If on the crank flywheel, there should be a port that can be opened on the bellhousing(rubber plug) that will have similar markings.

But neither matters if the technician did not inhibit the ECU or vacuum timing controls. I've had my fair share of ignorant smog techs fail my cars due to not knowing to check the base timing with the advanced function disabled.

 

One the 3rd gen Accords, the marks are on the flywheel/flex plate....like Mike said there is a rubber plug where the trans and engine mate.

With time they can be hard to see. Get a good light and set the engine to TDC, I've used old nail polish (don't tell the wife) or a marker (silver sharpie is my friend) to highlight the TDC mark/dimple.

Also on these, there is no ECU jumper. You have to remove and plug the vac lines that goes to the dist.....remember the 3rd gen's are OBD-0, codes are read (LXI models) via a LED light on the ECU that is under the drivers seat - view from the rear of the drivers seat.

With the vac lines off you should be about 4 BTDC.

There is another check you can do with only one vac hose off (I think #5 on the FI modles), with the one off and plugged the timing should be 15 BTDC (+/- 2, so between 13 and 17).
