Default Engine shuts off while driving

When you try to restart the engine, does it fail to crank or does it crank and not start? If the engine cranks but won't start, listen for whether the fuel pump primes and check whether there is spark at the plugs.

Is the CEL on?

While im driving the car it will shut off and it has no dash lights. It still cranks but wont start till about 5 10 mins later and the lights come back on the dash and it starts up again. I already changed the ignition switch, it has an after market alarm do you think that could also be the problem.

Please add car information to your post.

When the car shuts off and won't restart, measure voltage to body ground at both bolts securing the battery fuse in the hood fuse box. Post the readings.

Do you have automatic transmission? Did it shut off at a stop? This happened on my car with a bad thermostat. The signal was bad, so the car think the engine was overheating. And shuts it down. And won't start until it cools down a bit.
