Default Repeated bad ICM

Morning peeps,

I have an EG with a '96 spec DC2 ITR B18c swap in. A few weeks ago the tach needle went crazy for a few seconds before the engine died completely along with an EML light. As i've had this about a year and a half ago (replaced with a brand new aftermarket one) I knew straight away it was the ignition control module (ICM).

Sooooo, I replaced said ICM with an OEM Honda one. Fast forward a few weeks and I'm at Rockingham Speedway on a track day. The car performed perfectly all day long, no problems at all, then I'm on the motorway back to my house when I start getting the dreaded crazy tach needle and misfiring. Luckily I managed to get home without it failing, and after driving the car a short distance last night it seems that the tach needle reads completely wrong now, the revs don't match what is actually happening and rarely go above 2,000RPM.

So anyway, I'll need to replace it for the third time. My question is, is there something else which could be causing these to fail constantly?

The problem could be a bad wire or poor contacts in the distributor connector rather than a bad ICM. However, intermittent problems can be tricky as troubleshooting will only yield answers when the problem occurs. Therefore, do extensive troubleshooting with the problem evident.

Post the CEL codes.

Ohm test the coil.

Have the ICM tested.

Ohm test the distributor wires, and measure voltages reaching the coil and ICM.

I had ICM issues a while back, had a hunch it only messes up when it was hot so I had O'reillys test it multiple times back to back to build heat in it. Sure enough it failed, I bought a new one and I was good to go.

Good luck
