Picking up the ITR tomorrow... Tell me what is the MOST legal:
Alright, so tomorrow morning (pending any more fuckups from my bank) I will be picking up my ITR. I'm buying it from a private party, and since the car is currently being financed the bank holds the title. When I purchase the car pretty much the only thing I will have is a notarized receipt of purchase signed by the seller and I for about a week until the title is released from the bank's super-secret-underground-storage-vault.
So, obviously, I have a hard-on the size of Jupiter to drive the car. My problem is I have a ******* SWEET deal going with my insurance. Seriously, I will be paying less than half of what I should be paying being 19 years old. And I do NOT want to blow this getting a fucked up ticket for driving without the proper credentials.
The question at this point is, which is more legal in the state of Illinois:
-Drive the car on the receipt of purchase until the title arrives, if I get stopped for driving without plates, explain the situation to the cop and show him the receipt of sale.
-Somehow go to the DMV and get them to give me temporary license plates for the car. (I don't see how this will be possible without the title for the vehicle.)
-Take the plates off my old car, put them on the new car.
-Say **** the police and not do anything.
I've talked to a bunch of the people regarding this matter and it seems everyone's thoughts conflict. The bastards I've talked to at the DMV are so amazingly unhelpful they didn't tell me anything of any interest. (I chalk this up to the average DMV worker being more disgruntled than a legion of postal workers.)
Any past experiences any of you guys have had regarding a situation like this would be very helpful. As I said, I'm dying to drive the car, but if I can get a bogus ticket because it's illegal for me to drive it without the title, I'll just wait the week or so and pass the time by jerking off on the hood in regular intervals.
Thanks dudes

Always try and do things the legal way.
Goto to your local DMV's website (hopefully they have one) and it should help you out.
Even if you have to wait, be patient and do things correctly the first time. This will actually save you headaches. It is no big deal if you can't drive the car for one week ( get it towed home if you have to). But, if you drive it home illegally and get caught, you may not be able to drive it for awhile.
Good luck.

You'll need your local DMV's help on this one, laws are always different. It would be fine around here to drive around with just the reciept of sale. No one expects you to buy a car, tow it home, and have it sit there until the registration goes through. That **** can take months, at least around here it does.
I know right, that's what I'm thinking. Complete BS if they expect me to just sit here looking at the car for the time it takes for the banks to finish ******* around. I also find it to be amusing that the illinois DMV website, cyberdriveillinois.com is nearly as un-helpful as the idiots at the actual DMV office.
Whatever you do, just be patient and do it the correct way.
Fooking DMV.

What we had to do is make an appointment at the bank that was holding the title, and then the old owner and I both went to the bank. I paid off the lien directly to the bank, and the bank gave me the title right there.
I think you can get this done easily, but it'll be a couple of days later than you think.

When I bought my ITR used. I made the cheque payable to the previous owner and the bank that he owes money to. I also went with him to his bank and made sure he paid off his lien.
When I first bought my car, the officer I bought it from gave me his plates, and I sent them back when I recieved mine. I was pulled over during this time, but always carried a bill of sale with me, and there were no problems.

Another IL R, congratulations. You'll have to come out for a cruise with us. We had about 10 R's for a chicago cruise a couple months back.

that's exactly what i had to do when kelly and I bought the wagon earlier this year. The bank wasn't open on sunday, so we trusted the owner and left her w/ cash for the car. She went to the bank on monday, paid off the lein and had the bank mail us the pink slip

I wouldn't get caught w/ using different plates, not just for the sake of your insurance rates, but so you won't wind up in jail. my .02
if the specific car your driving is insured with the correct VIN # ....in the registered drivers name ...what is there to not undertsand ....what are you supposed to do ..drive with any plates at all

If he took a plate off of his minivan, persay (for arguments sake) and put it on his ITR, that would be a criminal situation in most states....
sorry if I didn't clarify myself

no, no, you didn't understand me...if he keeps it registered in the previous owners name, that is fine...(but the previous owner may not want to do that, technically he could be sued if there was an accident, etc...)

As long as you are insured there shouldn't be a problem. I just purchased my Arrr a few months ago in WI. The owner of the vehicle should have the title, but the lein holder's name should be on it also. When I bought my car the owner signed the title over to me then I took it to the bank that I was financing the car through. My bank then took care of paying off the previous owners debt on the car, with any extra money from the sale then going to the previous owner. It took ~2 months for the DMV to process the paperwork. Just carry the bank papers in the car, along with proof of insurance and you should be fine. This is the way I did it and I had no problems. HTH
Congrats on the new kaa

So your insured that is good. You do not need the title of the car to drive around legally. Keep your reciept until you have your new registration. Go to a local licence plate registration office with your receipt and old registration and your going to transfer the old plate to the new car. Your recipt is proof of ownership, you may want to bring all bank papers also and if your state does any testing like emissions bring all forms too. The registration office will give you a temp. plate if you want a new one. This is how it is done in FL.

right on
just don't use a plate from another vehicle. That's the *worse* thing you could possibly do. No plate is far better than that.. unless you like felony stops and jail

Then you might have some crazy *** repoers after your ARRHHH
