01/02 Questions
I am thinking of looking for an '01 or '02 Accord. I really like '05-'07 but it'll take too long for me to save. I hope to have around $2500 (hopefully, a bit more) saved up and hope to look around near summer or just after (hopefully, I'll have $3K+ instead). But, the 7th gens ('05-'07) average around $4 K to $5 K. Anyway, I have some questions about the 6th gen Accords, especially.
I am wondering about the automatic transmissions. This is the infamous ATX with oft-reported failures or troublesome - maybe difficult to avoid a seller's auto that has problems? Yes, I know to have a mechanic check it. IF I consider an ATX car and it's okay for some period of time but then it needs a rebuild later on, how expensive is it? Do most 6th gen drivers scrap their car or find someone who can work on it? How much is it to fix at an independent garage? Just wondering.
Should I just skip ATX cars to be safe and look for a stick? I'm inclined to just look for a 5spd manual but if I find an ATX car that is in good shape, should I consider it?
Finally, one question about the 7th gen - I might as well ask here rather than post another thread? I was curious what the scoop is on V6 6 spd manual trannys and V6 5 spd ATX for this generation.
I guess that's it for now. I probably forgot a Q or two.

Imo I'd RUN (not walk) away from any 6th gen auto. Get the manual.
I love my 7th Gen V6 6 Speed. It's probably my favorite car that I've had. I've upgraded to a TL, but still kept the 7th gen and I actually prefer it to the TL. If I'd known how much more I'd like it, I probably would have never bought a newer car.

Does the 7th gen. V6 6spd. only come in coupe form?
I'll look for a manual... it'll be my first choice unless there's some incentive to consider an ATX.
'Still curious what the avg cost of a replaced/rebuilt AT is though.
My family has 2 sixth Gen Accords. A '02 EX auto, and '00 LX auto. The EX trans has 160k and is completely fine. The LX has 120k and the trans started slipping at 80k. Its hit or miss.....the LX was babied all its life (was my grandmother's since new), and still went to crap.....the EX is a salvaged car that was beaten on before my parent's purchased it.
But yes, try and find a 5-speed. Pretty much no issue with them. Super reliable like almost any Honda manual trans. And the V6s in the 6th Gen only came auto, and had just as many problems. The V6 6-speeds you see are swapped from the CL-S or other J series motors that came manual.
I myself have a 5th Gen....I personally like the cars more, and the auto's in those things are tanks.

I plan to replace the AT in my 5th Gen Accord with one from a Prelude for no other reason than the gear ratios. I want to buy a trans and know it is good when I put it in. So I asked around at some locals shops and found that to simply rebuild an AT with no major parts being replaced would be around $700. For a rebuild that a 6-Gen would probably need would be around $2000. Maybe somewhere in between if you are lucky. But again, it depends on the shop you talk to.
The 7th Gen V6 6 Speed does come in a sedan as well in 06 and 07. Mine is an 06. The rest of the years, this combo was only offered in a coupe.
