so I bought a was said to be a jdm gsr transmission. The guy said he had a gsr with a jdm itr swap and this jdm gsr transmission. There were a bunch of people asking about it on the page he was selling it on and the the price was decent ($400 firm) so I met up with the guy the same night and it seemed good and the guy didn't seem shady at all he seems like a stand up guy and like he knew what he was talking about and not a tool bag so I bought it off him. I just wanted to try to confirm this is a gsr before I put the time and effort in to swap my trans out. Now before everyone hops on me and tell me this issue has been beat to death and do some research I spent hours looking up info and I know alot times they tell you to take the case apart and count the teeth 66/15 for gsr 64/15 for ls) I read on a post on here a pre 97 will have tapered rollers on you diff and read about Vin plate or sticker and s80/y80 stamp that could be both but I found something on mine I couldn't find any posts on there is "3220877" stamped in big black numbers on the top on my trans. here is what I know....
-no Barcode sticker
-no Vin plate or even indents for the rivets just smooth where the Vin plate should be
-no s80/y80 stamp on the bell housing near slave cylinder where it usually is
-it's non lsd
-I popped my axle seal off the driver side and it was solid I didn't see a tapered bearing
-"3220877" stamped on top trans in black
if anyone could shed some light on it I would greatly appreciated it I was hoping maybe the black numbers on top could help identify it if not guess I got take the case off thanks for reading
I'll tell you that I just that you are correct in that pre 97 has a tapered bearing at the differential. I am swapping Y80 GSR internals with ITR LSD and FD back into the Y80 case.
Previous owner swapped the Y80 internals into a YS1 transmission case to make it a cable type.
I know for a fact my gears are GSR. If you want me to count some teeth or take pictures let me know what you need as I have both cases open.
The open differential has tapered bearings and also tapered cup shims in the casing. I think when you look into the case (from the outside) passed the axle seals you are seeing the backside of the cup shims not the actual bearing. My Y80 case has a sticker on it showing Y80 not a plate with rivets. I think that was on obd2b engines. Don't quote me though.
Just open the case up and look. It take 30 minutes to crack it open and you will know for sure what you have. It's very easy to do and straight forward. All you need is a 12mm, 14mm, 19mm crescent wrench for the reverse sensor, hex key, and pliers to separate the c clip holding the case to the gear shaft.
so I put the trans in first then marked the main shaft and the diff at 12 o'clock and spun it to see if the diff would line up at 4.2 or 4.4 to see the final drive and it lined up at 4.4 (actually it seemed like 4 and a half) so I'm pretty sure the final drive is 4.4 witch makes me feel better but I'm going to take the case off just to be certain
thank you PR8urVtec it's a big help... seems like the 3 things to look for are the tapered diff bearings, thicker shift forks and 66 teeth on the diff. I will update when I get the case off... thanks again
ok so here is the update... I took the case off and it's a gsr! tapered rollers on the diff and also you are correct if you pop the seal off you are only seeing the shims so you have to take the case off to confirm what bearing are in. I also noticed "330 371" stamped on the bottom of the trans case as well. I hope this can help someone else out if they are trying to do some research. It seems the quick way to check if you are going to purchase is to put it in first and get a paint marker and mark the main shaft and diff and see if it takes 4.2 or 4.4 turns for the diff to line up. The pics help me to confirm the trans thanks for all help guys.
