I'm about to replace the rear main seal on my '97 LX while doing a clutch job. Figure I'd get at it while it's right there in front of me. I'm also going to do the oil pan gasket at this time.

My question is: should I remove the right side cover and reseal that with ultra grey, or does it usually not leak? The FSM says to put RTV on all mating surfaces of the right side cover.

I can either take the right side cover off and tap in the rear main seal with it off of the car, or just work with it on the car. I don't see an advantage to doing it one way or another (unless someone else does).

 

Right side cover? Are you referring to the panel that has the rear main seal? You can remove it if you want, clean up all of the old hondabond, reseal with liquid gasket and pop in the new seal.

 

Yeah, that's what I'm referring to. I didn't know if 99% of the time, there wouldn't be a leaking issue with this cover, or if it'd be smarter to just take it off and reseal.

Didn't want to create a potential problem if there isn't one, you know?

 

Depending on mileage, it be best to put a new seal on that panel anyways.
