2000 Accord EX V6 automatic shift release
My shifter when placed in park does not fully engage being in park. I have to remove the shifter handle to get the white plastic plunger to pop all the way up. This is the only way I can get car fully into park and I am able to remove key from ignition. I have searched online and I am being told to remove transmission shift cable and or remove and replace transmission.
I am hoping someone else has had similar problem that could assist or at least give me example of what to try. Thanks

Verify the shifter handle has not been bent not allowing the button to fully release.
Verify the shift interlock solenoid is functional.
Verify the shifter/shifter cable is properly adjusted.
Verify the gear switch on the side of the trans is properly adjusted.
Verify the gear switch on the side of the trans has continuity through the circuit when in park.
Transmission has no affect on the shifter, besides the easily removable gear selector switch on the left side cover.
